Makita 9227 + Pads

Hi all,

I'm into detailing some time now and been reading Autopia alot.

After purchasing a PC kit (PC+Sonus pads) from autopia, I can't say that am too happy with it. :(

I've given it about 3 weekends' work and it appears that too much time is needed for it to work (for scratches and swirls removal) so I'm going for a rotary - the Makita 9227.

It's too much hassle to order again an 110v version (since I need a bigger 220v transformer), so i'm going to get it locally for about 290€ (=$365  )

Here are my questions re the Makita:

I have about 10 pads for the PC (sonus DAS and LC) - I think they're 6" and i don't want to buy more for the Makita. Do I need an extra flex plate and will it work with 6" pads?

What is the recommended pad size for the Makita? I think it's 7.5". I'm using my existing 6" pads, should I be extra careful, will it cut less, more or the same? :nixweiss

Thanks!

Your 6 inch pads are fine. You'll need a new backing plate to go with rotary since it's different from PC.

I started with Makita rotary. However, i need to use PC to eliminate holograms left from using rotary anyway. But if you really wanna try rotary, you should find a junk hood to work with first. Or find someone who is willing to have you tested your skills on the hood. STart with slow speed to get a feel of it. Enjoy and good luck

The backing plate on the PC will not fit the Makita. Since you're going to use 6-inch pads, make sure you get a 5-inch backing plate.

6-inch pads are fine. The smaller the pads, the more aggressive they can be so make sure you adjust the speed accordingly.

Are you sure they're not 6.5-inch pads?

Maybe they are 6.5" not sure - bought them from Autopia as a set with the PC.

Thanks for the info, BTW!

Recently began using the Lake Country Tufted pads. I really like them. I think they're 7 inch(?)..or maybe it's a 7inch backing plate.....I'll have to check.

I have used the 3M pads, Sonus DAS, and Edge pads on a 9227. However, I echo everyone else's sentiment in that you should get a smaller backing plate when using the Sonus DAS pads because they can be very hard to remove from a larger backing plate.
