Maintaining an Opti-coated finish?

Mission: Complete Detail of a Hyundai Accent
Time since last detail: OMG!!

This is not my cars... I would never let my car get this dirty. It is a car of a struggling artist... My sister :D So I had to do the detail for free. This was done sunday and is my easter present to her. See I'm a nice guy.

Ok here go the dirty pictures... Shield your eyes! Wait, don't shield your eyes because then you won't see how great the car came out.

The car was a mess as you can see. Bugs all over, tar, bird droppings, etc... The interior was just the same! Nasty!

Started with the wheels, boy they were nasty. The water was running off them a dark brown. Probably took me 5mins a wheel.

I used my pressure washer on the car. Running it about half power, guessing it was around 700psi. I then did a dawn wash of the car. Had a problem getting the bugs off the front but it was nothing that a little lighter fluid couldn't handle. I was a little upset though because the front of her car is covered with rock chips :( nothing I could do for her there. I did get the dirt out of them by using the pressure washer so they looked a lot better.

I now started the clay part. I was using one of my Eagle One Clay bars. Yes, they still streak like hell. I'm surprised at the quality of paint on this car. Most of the damage to the finish was caused by lack of attention and not from lack of paint quality. For the most part the paint was incredibly smooth. I only had to clay the front bumper, hood, rear bumper, and trunk. The rest of the paint I just needed to hit a few parts. Smooth as Glass!

After claying the paint, it still had a lot of staining on it. The hood, trunk, and roof had streaks of a yellow/brown discoloration on it. Very nasty. I had to pull out the Pinnacle Paint Cleansing Lotion (PPCL). I just have to say this stuff is amazing! It was pulling off the discoloration with total ease. I went over the whole car with this stuff and it took everything off. Amazing stuff, left the paint a bright white.

I then pulled out my good ole Rotary! My Makita 9227C. Because I started late, I was running out of daylight. I couldn't do a polish and then wax it. I had to use a one step wax to save time so it was a good thing that I had picked up some Meguiars #6 Cleaner wax. To apply this wax I used my rotary set for around 1000rpms. I was using a Lake Country Mfg. DuroFoam Finishing pad. (It is the same foam that is on the Black Foam finishing pad sold through CMA for the PC)

First thing I did was tape off all trim on the car. I hate having to clean wax off black trim. I then went over the car with the buffer. I applied the wax directly to the pad and then smeared it over the car. I then made about three passes over the area with the buffer and then if the wax wasn't even, I made another pass to even out the wax. I went around the whole car doing this leaving the residue on the car to haze. I then came back and buffed all the residue off with cotton towels. OMG the car was looking great!

Now for the interior. Now this was a task. I grabbed a box and a trash can. Loaded the stuff to save into the box and then threw everything else away. I think the back seat of this car was used as a garbage can. Under the seats were packed full of papers. I then vaccumed it all out with my new Ridgid Wet/Dry Vac. It really sucks, litterally. The floor mats were really stained so I had to pull them out and scrub them. I used Prestone Carpet/Upholstery Cleaner. You just spray it on, scrub it with the brush, let it sit, wipe down with wet towels, let floor mats dry, vaccum and then stick them back in the car. I say that it really cleaned them well but left a strong cleaner type smell on them. Really stank up the car.

Now, the dash I think had more dust on it than the top of my hot water heater. I didn't know that much dust could collect on the dash of a car. I washed all the vinyl with warm water with a little Eagle One Car Soap in it. After it dried I applied 303 Aerospace Protectant. I then cleaned all the windows with TurtleWax ClearVue and some Black and White Newspaper to polish.

Ok, here is the exterior of the car freshly polished/waxed.

That’s totally cool. It’s like an Oprah makeover or one of them Richard Simmons teary-eyed success stories! ;) (image of person holding up big baggy pants would go here)

Only if I had a rotary :) but the PC will do for now.

Your sister must really be happy to see the after results. How old is she :D j/k (finally got a grip on my hormones well almost.)

Like the Jenny Jones show where they transform bad kids (dirty car) into good kids (clean, detailed cars) by means of Drill Intstructor aka Billy Mosses (sp?) (Autopian.)

Great Job :xyxthumbs

Jason

PS Didn't know an Autopian can post more than 3 pictures in a post. I'll remember this the next time I go about posting crazy amounts of pictures. David or moderators, Hw many pictures can I put in a post (when I host them through another website.)

wow intel. incredible. :xyxthumbs these transformation threads are the best ones out there. i mean, if your car's already shiny and then you make it a little bit shinier, no big deal. but stuff like this is amazing to me.

I love threads like this....

I have one coming up soon and hope to do same......With cars like that I am aski for a whole weekend....I try to stay away from the cleaner Wax...but if time is limited I go there....Great job...

Well done! I always, like these threads too, especially for those cars that are obviously workhorse daily drivers. I suppose I expect to see glistening high-end vehicles (though I know there are a lot that aren't well cared for), but I especially love seeing the "lower-end" cars lovingly taken care of.

I hope your sister makes an effort to keep it clean :D I wouldn't be able to stand the interior of my car like that.

:scared

Some of the most interesting posts to me are the "makeovers." Your results are great. Based on the plates, I assume your sister lives in Music City. Good for her. Looks a lot like the Mazda Protege I did for my son's fiance, except I think that the Mazda's interior may have been dirter (it wasn't as full of junk, but it was nasty nasty). In her defense, it was her grandfather's car and, after his passing, the car was totally neglected for at least two years.

Since that cleaning (about nine months ago), she has kept the car in pretty good shape (by daily driver standards - not Autopian standards). I think it's ready for another serious cleaning, but I'll let my son deal with that. :xyxthumbs

what is that blue tape for? is it to protect the trim from wax, etc? where did you get it? will plain old masking tape suffice? thanks

WOW, what a complete makeover! I'm sure your sister will be really happy... :up :bow

Oh, and you're right, those Hyundais actually have really good paint. I helped detail a friend's new 2003 Tiburon and there was less OP on it than my Bimmer!

EDIT: I just noticed, those floormats on the Accent seem plusher and nicer compared to the ones of the Bimmer too!

It's Low Adhesive Painter's (?) masking tape. It's good because it is low adhesive but what I don't like about it is how much adhesive junk it leaves behind! I use it to tape off sharp emblems or rubber trim which can dirty up pads with oxidized rubber or embedded dirt. Also keeps black trim white residue free!

It is 7-day Clean Release Tape. Works great for keeping wax off trim.

Who makes the tape you are using? I've had no problem with it leaving behind adhesive.

3M makes the stuff I am using! Whose stuff are you using? It doesn't leave it behind everywhere but there are some spots that are noticeable. Grab some with your fingers and see if they feel like they have a residue on them afterwards. The 3M stuff (Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-mart) leaves a residue.

Maybe it's just me?

Little late with the response... Sorry

Mine is made by Manco, Inc. I got it at Home Depot.
