Get the picture?

The rust you see from this pic was from about 1/2 sq foot, albiet from the bad part of the car. I probalby do 2 or 3 a months this bad.

Patrick, this is why I go through so much clay...ya see?

Yup. That was two days ago...taken with my camera phone, which is why the picture quality sucks. I had to throw the clay away afterward...which is why I go through at least two bars a week!

I have the Auto Intl system, but the decontamination system doesn't even begin to touch heavy rust. If the rust is barely present (like when you can't really see it, but can feel it with a plastic bag, it seems to do the trick. But rarely to I encounter this amount of rust, so the system has been a let down for me...but in some areas (like where I moved from in Sacramento) I imagine it would be sufficient.

RAG,

When you clay a car that is as contaminated as that, how much marring do you get from the actual claying? How aggressive are you claying the car?

Interesting. I wonder what somebody like Ron Ketchum at AutoInt would have to say about that, he can be very helpful at times.

But then again if the clay is working for you then it's working.

where's that rust coming from?

It comes from metallic particles sitting on the paint and flash rusting into the paint; it can be metal particles from break rotors, industrial fallout, or even iron in the dirt/dust. With the salt air and industiral areas around here, it's murder on paint - the more dirt that sits longer on cars, the worse it tends to be. Autopians wouldn't have much of a problem as they don't let debris sit on their cars for long periods of time. I clay, polish and seal some cars 3 times per year, and still I can't believe the rust occurs in between.

If I'm polishing afterward (which I am 90% of the time) I clay aggressively, like apply 5-10lbs of pressure...depending on the condition, otherwise, I'd be claying for hours. And yes, I do get marring...not usually visible in the shade, but under halogens or direct sunlight it's pretty ugly; but it is more like "scuffing", and thus isn't usually very deep (much less deep than standard washing swirls). If I'm not polishing afterward, I first warn the customer that some marring may occur and then I clay as carefully as possibly...usually only applying a few lbs of pressure and kneading often.

It's funny, but I'd have to say that I'm quite the clay expert as a result of all the contamination around here - I've done 3 cars (2 were brand new) that didn't require claying in the last 6 months or so. I've now used about 15 different types of clay in the process.
