Once upon a time in a long lost land below the foothills of Virgina there was a car guy who enjoyed supercars like no other. His passion for speed and the finer things in life stands tall. From Bentley's to Ferrari's each car is hand selected and enjoyed. His stable includes a Ferrari 458, Bentley Muslanne, Lamborghini Aventador, Audi R8 GT and a few other nice daily drivers. His latest addition to the stable was a brand new Maclaren MP4-12C.
The MP4-12C is the newest and one of the most talked about supercars to hit the US. In fact there so new this particular car was the third one sold state side. What else is there to say about the newest sports super car. In dry weight this car is less then 3000lbs. To be exact 2945lbs! Yet it still produces 592 BHP at seven 7000 rpms. As if this isn't enough, it reaches a max speed of 205 miles per hour. Its a quick off the line at 0-62 in just 3.3 seconds. Incredible enough at that speed, this is even more impressive. It takes just 8.9 seconds for the beast to hit 124 mph. All them horses are packed tightly in a carbon fiber Mono cell with both front and rear aluminum frames.
When it comes to a machine like this, many people can only dream to be in the presence of one, yet to be able to fully see this car in person and spend hours perfecting it is another thing. Threw hard work and passion these three gentleman perfected this Maclaren MP4-12C. In no particular order please say hello to Dave Purser from Unique Mobile Detailing, Eric "Trushine" Witt from Trushine Detailing and Barry Theal of Presidential Details.
First up is Dave Purser from Unique Mobile Detailing. Based in Bristol, Virgina. Dave is a full time collage student at Eastern Tennessee State. Currently Dave is working on his Masters Degree in Motorsports Management and also details to feed his passion for fine automobiles.
Next up is Eric "Trushine" Witt. Eric is a charamastic, funny witted gentleman from Knoxville, Tennessee where he owns and operates Trushine Mobile Detailing. His passion for supercars and making people smile exceeds himself.
Last but least is Barry Theal from Presidential Details in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A former Military guy who has spent the last 16 years detailing and now is a happy father and husband who enjoys the many aspects of detailing.
Between these three gentleman there was over 1200 miles of driving roundtrip to make this happen. One day, one super car, and one goal. Perfection was the menu. Many people often ask why does a new car need detailed? A detailer and car enthusiast look at cars a little different then the normal person who uses there car to get from point A to point B. They look at the mechanics and design. Many super cars ranging from the Bugatti to Ferrari are works of art. Each company pursues an ultimate goal of catching the eye with elegant lines to a roar so loud that finely tuned ear will know its coming. As a detailer its our goal to not only cleanse the surfaces, but to make the car shine like a wedding night bride. Then last ,but not least to ensure all its surfaces are protected for a lifetime. Preserving history is a vital importance when it comes to modern day super cars.
To ensure refinement and longevity a detailer always starts out with a decontamination process. This consist's of a variety of steps to ensure all vehicle surfaces are cleansed to the standards of a surgeons hands prior to surgury. Removing exterior pieces is a must, here you can see Dave removing a the vehicle registration plate.
With the plate removed the examination began. This step is vital prior to the start. A good solid inspection is the stepping stone on this vehicles foundation to life. During the process several area's were pointed out amongst the gentleman. Often people talk about swirls, holograms, random scracthes, and so on. As detailers its not only our job to correct mistakes like this, but many of us try to explain our process and how to prevent this common paint issues.
Below in this photo you will notice scuff marks on the carbon fiber that are caused by an abrasive material crossing the surface at some point. These are what is known as Random Deep Isolated Scratches. At somepoint in this cars short life history something crossed paths both vertical and horizontal to scrape the surface.
Here in the below photo of the upper portion of the Maclarens MP4-12C spoiler you will notice what we call holograms or buffer trails. These are installed into the paint from a wool pad and a high speed polisher. Wool pads are often considered to have a bad name over the years because of marks like this. These marks dull the surface out and refract light. Creating an image of a car that lacks both gloss and perfectly leveled paint. Keep in mind this is an operator fault and not the pad itself.
While the Titanium Silver Metallic Paint drowned out most of the micro marring which it made very hard to capture, If you look closely into the lighted area's you will see some light micromarring. Micro marring is a term used to describe small scratches usally caused by improper wash techniques or light cleaning.
Its common after the inspection process to follow it with the Decontamination steps. Its was the goal of these three gentleman to first start with the wheels to remove all the imbedded brake dust and dirt. Here you can see Eric spraying down the wheels with Sonax Wheel Cleaner. Sonax makes the most effective and safest wheel cleaner on the market. Its acidic free and a popular product amongst well respected detailers. When cleaning wheels you want full chemical coverage.
Proper brushes are of importance, here Barry is using a wheel brush to get back in the deeper area's of the barrels. The soft bristles made for effective yet safe adgitation of the brake dust.
Once the wheels were rotated and the same process was followed Barry rinsed the remaining dust and debries off the wheels suface.
To start Barry gave the car a prerinse to remove any loose debries.
Once the wheels were clean Dave began the paint cleansing. He used a high foam soap designed to strip the all previous wax and dirt from the vehicles surface.
With a tempature of roughly 38 degrees out there was no time to waste so as Dave was moving around the car Eric began to mitt the car down to break down all the loose contaminants on the vehicles exterior surfaces.
Barry followed behind Eric, like clock work with the precision swiss movements and mitted the remaining surfaces.
Dave followed for the final rinsing.
Using soft microfibers collectively all three of these gentleman dried the extrior surface.
Here you can see how Eric used the Metro vac and blast to blow dry the wheels and prevent spotting. He also utilized this around emblems and tighter area's
The masking began. Its important as detailers to mask anything that the polisher could come across. Here in the below photo you can see how either the dealership or factory didn't complete this step. Take notice of the white polishing residue left on the trim. This could have been worse luckily we were able to remove this, but these little mistakes can get costly with burnt trim.
