Look what I saw on the road yesterday

If everyone switched over to a Volt type vehicle then what would most of the major city's do about the rolling blackouts they already have due to a piss poor grid system and greater demand ? The Al Gore group doesn't want us to build any more nuke plants or drill for more crude. I think all of the sides need to compromise and quit using this as a political football.

That makes too much sense.

There are plenty of environmentalists that want nuke plants. It is just the NIMBY crowd that is the majority of the problem.

Guess you are missing the point. Where does the electricity come from??
THis isn't a hybrid that generates it's own power. It comes from a power plant. A fossil fuel, pollution belching power plant. So until the US switches to nuke power, this is a feel good item. Oh and where do you dispose of those toxic laden storage batteries?

Outta sight, outta mind I guess.

....

I'm not signing up for a hybrid/electric vehicle, but maby now I'm the one "missing the point" ...But let's add a couple of corrections... regarding power generation in the U.S. 1) you left out hydroelectric and 2) we do have nuclear power plants. And then you seem so concerned about the disposal of the "toxic laden" batteries which are easily and routinely recycled (with 90+% of the lead recovered and reused) yet no concern for the waste from nuclear power plants for which we have no clue as to how to dispose of it...so we bury it??? But you did get that point correct...outta sight...outta mind.

Yeah, people like me that just want to know a safe and effective plan for disposing of the by-products w/o burying them "in my back yard". But hey, for everyone who wants one (we've got ours) just raise your hand and we can dig a hole in their backyard.

Give me a detail van that produces it's own power by driving, some batteries (that charge while driving) under the van for running my equipment while at a job, some plugs outlets on it.......and I'd buy one. But then of course, since it wasn't using gas or electricity, they would have to tax the hell out of something else or jack the price up on something. Like tires, they would probably start costing $500 each and only last a season....

The price of new technology is always high. It takes time for efficiencies and new technology to get implemented so the price comes down. The other factor is other market forces such as gas prices. At some point, the price of oil will go up and stay up then people will consider alternate technologies but like everything there will be some who resist just like they did on many other changes.

Here is an interesting link

A Volt, when on electric power, is essentially running on coal, or natural gas, or whatever the predominant power source is for the local grid. However, the amount of "pollution per mile" is still less because the large power plants produce power more efficiently and more cleanly than multiple individual gasoline engines - even with current technology (which will improve).

This is a 40k Cruz...... Wonder how much the ss will be

Ron, it's obvious you've got something against GM, but please at least be objective enough to realize what the Volt really is -- it's a technical exercise. A halo car meant to demonstrate what is feasible and prove to the industry that a mass-produced vehicle with advanced battery and electric drivetrain technologies is possible. Cost to the consumer may be prohibitive at this point and time, but that's hardly a reason to pan the entire vehicle.

I wonder what your reaction would be if your beloved BMW or Audi were to have gestated and produced the Volt or a car like it?

Actually I've got nothing against GM.

I have a problem with eyeball over substance........

Just like corn ethanol, it was supposed to be the 2nd coming. When all it really did, was screw up cars/boats etc. Raise cost of food/feed, and cause a shortage in other grains.

Used to be when a company wanted to showcase a new concept, they made a "concept car".

Ethanol is just another farm subsidy (aka as corporate welfare for agribusiness). It as a scam under the guise of energy independence.

However, like any technology it takes a while to get fine tuned and will take many years to mature where is becomes practical (lower price, longer range, etc). Some want to spend $50k on a one kind of car and other group wants to spend it on a different kind of car.

The price of oil will ultimately determine it's success but then another technology make surpass it.

Yep. But in fact using corn to produce ethanol is causing world shortages of grains and increasing food costs for everyone.

Part of my comment that seemed to get miss understood, is better illustrated by this comparison.

Ford Fusion base price = $19,580
Ford Fusion Hybrid base price = $29,100

Even at 3.50/gal for gas, 9500 is a big break even point

I think like you do Ron lol ...... yes that is a lot of gas bought for the difference in price but it is helpful to the environment just like the prius and if you have the mind to help the environment than go ahead and spend it thank god there is people like that or we would be in trouble haha. As for me i'm sticking to my 9 mpg truck and I wouldn't change it for the world (literally haha):rockon

Pockets, if you're getting only 9 m.p.g. there is something wrong. Even beyond a heavy foot. I have/had a lot of late model F150's and not one of them is within 7 m.p.g. of that number.

The original Prius, the ones that were shipped from Japan were shipped over here, and the ships at sea burn the dirtiest fuel available. The crap NO country would allow to be burned. Yep, that's helpfull to the enviornment. (but then again so is every car made abroad)

And Chris, if you didn't try to be the first guy in line at every traffic light, you'd do better than 9 mpg. (or mebbe put it back to stock)
