Let's talk about lousy factory paint jobs!

I have significant OP on my '04 Accord coupe and when I complained to the service manager at the selling dealership, he did actually look at it and within seconds judged it was within "factory specs" and I was out-to-lunch as far as Honda was concerned.

I'm now exploring other posibilities for OP remediation.....

Dang Scott! A RR with OP - Shame on them! Is the owner aware of it? even cares? He should be pi$$ed if a MERE Bentley had better paint than the RR.

I ordered a Nissan Titan a few mos back in Radient Silver. The OP was a bit more noticeable on the sides but the hood and roof weren't too bad.

I was much more concerned that the dealer just give it to me off the truck, plastic on. I didn't want "Mongo" in the prep department taking his rotary with a green Scotch Brite pad to it.

I had to sign for that! no,no that's fine, just give it to me , nice Mongo!nice Mongo! Look! there's a nice new black "Z" ! Go Mongo , Go!

This was a new truck and a new plant and I've heard of a lot of paint related problems. I was lucky and after I peeled off the plastic I only found a faint scuff on the roof. Not the best paint job but good enough. Dawn, clay,PC,FP,FMJ Nice.

One of the major reasons is that robots spray the paint, the nozzles can't stay close enough to the vehicle to have a real smooth clear application.

Very true, just ask anyone at GM (see my Denali). Pretty bad in some spots, barely noticeable in others. Its like the spray gun was clogged or something?

Heh heh, yeah, all my cars have crappy paintjobs from the factory. The A8/S8 weren't exactly cheap, and they're just awful by my standards, and the inexpensive vehicles are even worse. Only good jobs I've ever had were repaints, and those were back when it was different paint technology.

The lacquer on the '85 Jag doesn't have any OP (at least that I can think of/spot right now), but it's *awfully* thin these days :o And it has/had plenty of other paint problems, from factory runs to cracking to you-name-it.

Take a look at this Jeep Grand Cherokee (00 I think) I did a week ago, horrid orange peel :(

Now my Taurus actually looks very good IMO :)

Got to throw BMW in there also. My biggest pet peeve with them is their paint. The orange peel i can almost live with since its common on almost all finishes, but it is also EXTREMELY soft. The slightest touch with the wrong applicator and it's marred (sp?)

Yes I see it alot on every make.. Think about this if your a painter w/25+ years experience and you're trying to match the paint on a frt or rear clip and you have to intentionally give a car orange peel. That makes body repairs so easy to spot if you cannot match the factory OP:eek:

here's my 2cents.

I know nobody here wants orange peel but to ask that all cars come out of the factory with paints thats perfect is asking too much. you have to keep cost in mind when building a car and the options they come with. I'm sure everyone would love to have a totally silent car with no road noise, and an incredible stereo but how much would that add to the cost of the car...

Nice Bentley pic Scott :shocked

...can we have more?

I have several in the gallery linked in my sig. Just use my user name and the key word 'Bentley' in the search mode, or go through nearly 800 pics to find them! :p

He sold it to someone on the New Orlean Saints. :(

Gonzo-considering the orange peel is drastically less than on his wife's S600......

Anyway, he is having enough problems with the car's computers. It has been back 3 times now in less than a year for the same problem and he is ready to demand a refund under the lemon law.

The late model falcons and commodore's have orange peel as well but I don't think that it is too bad. My AU has PPG 2K paint finish and I love it. Heaps of metal flake and pretty thick. Holdens on the other hand are enamel with 2 coats base and 2 coats of clear. To make things worse, the bumpers are done in 2 pack. They never match the rest of the car.

I'm willing to live with the orange peel on my car, nothing compared to some of the other brands in OZ. Those really cheap bubble cars have the cheapest, thinest acrylic paint I have ever seen. The surface has no real lustre or depth and is always rough, no matter what you do to it.

If I was gonna buy a prestige car, I would expect a finish with no or very minimal peel. That rolls ain't too flash.:down

Well said.

Auto manufacturers at every level of the game are in business, and the main reason they are in business is to turn a profit and to make the stock holders happy. Cuts are made here and there in material quality and processes to save money which should translate to higher profits.

I could list area beside paint where cars have been cheapened.

What is the deal, i've been detailing a lot of new cars and NONE of them are orange peel free. SOme of them it's pretty bad. I'm looking at getting a Magnum R/T but everyone I see has some of the worst orange peel I've seen. (hell even a cayenne I detailed a few weeks back had HORRIBLe orange peel).

How are you autopians dealing w/ it? Anyone sanded a brand new car yet? :D Is there a way I can pay extra cash and have the car built to my specs and INSURE they do a flawless job on the paint (I know this is doubtfull).

What's the reasoning for this? They just don't care or what?

In your opinion on a factory painted vehicle:

1)What do you consider horrible orange peel?

2)What do you consider an acceptable level of orange peel?

The Dodge Magnums which I have seen upclose, in person, had no OP to very little OP. These were at the NYIAS and may have been wet sanded or prepped in someway to hide OP and defects. The thing which disappointed me about the Magnum and many newer cars is use of cheap materials on the interiors. Another thing about the Magnum/300 is the factory is barely keeping up with demand, so some cuts in overall quality may have been made. One last item is DC just change paint suppliers from PPG to DuPont or vice versa. I do not know why the change occured

Hi. I'm a Toyota, and much like my friends Honda and Acura, my paint sucks.

I swear, I look at my black 4runner and the paint just chips off!
