Let's be safe

Long story short, I walked through wet grass and then stepped onto my aluminum ladder. Foot slipped off and way overstretched my left calf. While the pain is subsiding and I am walking a lot better, for some reason my foot looks absolutely horrible...

Electrical cords, water, ladders, buffers, etc. We all work around hazards all day and because accidents happen so infrequently, we tend to take safety issues for granted. As most of us are self-employed, a serious injury can put us out of business for several weeks or months. Please be aware of your surroundings! I got off lucky, it could have been much worse, I could have ruptured my achilles tendon or broken my ankle.

i feel your pain. one time i was jogging on the street and jumped onto a curb where there was some algae that was slippery, and i slipped/twisted my ankle and fell to the ground. i immediataly had that hot rush (kinda like if you got kicked in the balls) to my stomach and i could barely walk to the park on the next street where i sat down for a half/one hour. that night/next morning my ankle was so swollen (like a baseball) that it hurt to put on my left shoe. it took quite some time for it to heal/feel better (a few months) and i thought i might have broken it and would have to go to the hospital eventually... :(

One time I scraped my knee and I washed it off with ONR and then clayed and polished and finished off with some swissvax. Now it's all shiny but still hurts oh well.

Got ice on it right now, but no rest for the wicked. After the horrible weather this winter, I'm taking advantage of every nice day we have for at least the next two months!

Have you self-employed guys looked into disability insurance? Is it prohibitively expensive if you're not working for a decent sized company?

I got hurt one time while I was unemployed. Fell and hurt my back. 2 1/2 years, I couldn't do ****. Luckily, I was young and my parents were willing to take care of me. Social Security does have a disability insurance program, but it takes forever to go through that process. Took me 2 years to go through it. I actually got the money after I was already healthy. Most of it went towards paying back my parents.

Just a reminder guys, that injury **** does happen. Especially if you have kids, I'd really consider disability insurance.

That said, I have no idea how expensive it is for the self-employed. It wouldn't surprise me if it were ridiculously expensive. Call your local insurance agent.

I maintain disability insurance that I pay myself. The cost is around $2000 a year. My insurance does not pay until I have been disabled for 3 months, but it pays pretty well after that.

Scott, get well soon. That looks like a painful injury.

Glad to hear you're OK. Hope it's not too serious, and I'm not a doctor, BUT I know 2 people who have ruptured their achilles tendon.... you do NOT want to have that happen. We're talking 6 weeks in a full-leg cast with your foot in a slanted position. One of my friends had a "sore" calf a couple days before the injury before rupturing it.

take care

Thanks y'all! I am walking around a lot better and while my foot actually looks worse (blood pooling) it isn't as swollen as it was. I guess I tore the calf muscle a bit. At least now it is down the level of a mild charlie-horse.

As Josh knows, the weather here has been absolutely miserable since September so I'm glad it wasn't worse. Now that we've had some nice days, I'd hate to be missing out on work. Like I said, I know I and probably most everyone here tends to take safety for granted since detailing injuries and accidents are so rare. I'm definitely being more aware of my surroundings, where I am stepping, etc since I jacked my calf.
