Learn it, love it, live it

Man, if only everyone here knew the rules of the road and actually exercised them. Left lane bandits piss me off and make my blood boil. Just as much as being tailgated.

If I had money, I would actually make a TV commerical that made this point. I really wish police enforced this as much as they do speeding. I remember in my defensive driving class a few years ago that 40% of all accidents were caused by unsafe speed, more than half of those accidents were caused by people driving too slow. I was driving to work on the tollway today, and there were vehicles in the middle and left lanes going 55 mph! RIGHT LANE PEOPLE!!!!

I believe that in the Chicago area, police officers are going to start ticketing any slow moving traffic in the left lane!!!!! Sweet! :xyxthumbs

If the govt is going to spend a ton of money on the "click it or ticket" ad campaign, why not make a "slower traffic keep right" campaign?

There actually is one of those here. A local lawyer has a bunch of

traffic safety tips commercials and keep right except to pass is

one of them.

There would definitely be more income from lane choice violations, at least here in Texas. As soon as I get into Arkansas, everybody suddenly learns how to drive. Oh, and if people want to kill themselves by not wearing a seatbelt, that is your choice, just don't make me late to work by driving under the speed limit in the left lane.

Oh, and while I'm rich, I will also produce an instructional video on how to properly merge onto a busy highway. Hint: it doesn't involve using your brakes.

Hmmm....

When I was a kid in South TX, people used to pull over to the shoulder to let you pass on the two lane highways. Driving courtesy was pretty much common. It's sad to learn that it has changed so much.

Leftlane bandits are rampant in MD. Seeing that it is an entitlement state, it's really no surprise.

That's only because they do actually enforce it in Arkansas. It used to be real bad there until about 5-6 years ago when they started to clamp down. Funny thing though, they cross the border into Texas and then sit their rearend in the passing lane.

How'bout the folks on cell phones. I know I'm guilty, but I pay attention to the road. Just a quick yes/no or I'll talk to you later. There's nothing worse than seeing a lady cutting off traffic on the freeway during rush hour making lane changes while talking on a cell phone.

One of our talk radio hosts was at a green light waiting for the car in front to go. It wouldn't so he honked his horn. The lady in the car in front of him got out, yelled obscenities at him ending with "Can't you see I'm on the phone?!!!"

Does this state bring out the stupid in people or something?

I drive I-35 daily and it is amazing the amount of people that hog the left lane while driving slower than the middle lane or the right lane. Additionally, driving courtesy is no longer existant. I remember growing up in West Texas when people would wave to you when they passed you. Oh well....Andrew

To be honest, there's good points here, but there's some missing logic.

The left lane is for the faster traffic, BUT (and it's a gigantic Rosie O'Donnell sized one), that doesn't mean that you have any right to get mad at someone doing 55 in a 55 in the left hand lane. They ARE the faster traffic. If you are behind them and think they're going slow, it's not their fault it's yours. You are the idiot who needs reminders. They are following the law. Remember there's no acceptable lane for speeding and endangering the lives of others.

I know everyone thinks that they are a reincarnated NASCAR champion, but the bottom line is that the government pays safety experts lots and lots of money to figure out the safest, most beneficial velocity for your vehicle to move at.

So, while I will always travel in the right hand lane while reserving the left one to pass, I will cut off every 16 year old (or those with the mental capacity of one) who feel the need to speed at any time. Then I'll grab my nextel and call my friend in the squad car to come have a chat with the brain surgeon who thinks it's a smart idea to do 80 in a 65 in Houston.

So in summary, it's absolutely a great law that slower traffic keeps right, as long as all the overcompensators realize that it doesn't mean they have a clear path to breaking the law.:angry

That would cause more accidents than anything. First, cutting someone off is dangerous and stupid. And to do that to a 16(or around there) year old, who just got their liscence is even dumber. They would probably not know what to do and are more likely to cause an accident than anything else.

Sorry but its drivers like that that piss me off. If you dont want to drive fast, great dont but dont cut people off and create a dangerous situation just because you make the choice not to speed.

jem7vwh,

I'm afraid you're mistaken about "Slower Traffic Keep Right"; it's regardless of your speed. If someone is going faster than you, you are "slower traffic". Keep right! See this webpage for details about the legalities of traveling in the left-hand lane in your state: http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

While the laws do vary from state to state, most states base their left-lane policy on the federal Uniform Traffic Vehicle Code. From the webpage:
The Uniform Vehicle Code states:

"Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ... "

Note that this law refers to the "normal" speed of traffic, not the "legal" speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right.
Please note that cutting off drivers traveling faster than you in an attempt to regulate their speed is a) unsafe, b) vigilantism, and c) would be considered reckless driving. Compare the relative safety of cutting someone off, and driving 10 over the limit . . . see the difference?
the bottom line is that the government pays safety experts lots and lots of money to figure out the safest, most beneficial velocity for your vehicle to move at.
Heh. Thanks for the chuckle . . . traffic engineers have long known that the safest speed limit for a given road should be set at the 85th percentile speed of free flowing traffic in good conditions (that is, the speed at which 85 out of 100 people are traveling at or below). On most interstates, using the 85th percentile rule, the limits should be at 75-80 mph. While some states have seen the light, a depressing number still have limits set at 65 (or lower!). Remember the hue and cry about "blood on the highways" when 55 was repealed? Government statistics show that the fatality rate (per million vehicle miles traveled) typically dropped in those states that raised their interstate limits closer to 85th percentile levels. I guess the engineers were right . . .

Why, then, do politicians regularly ignore the suggestions of the traffic engineers, and set limits lower than the 85th percentile rule suggests? Follow the money. Revenues from traffic fines are a big budget item in many locations . . . it matters not that lives are saved when limits are set properly; the tax man needs his juice! Keeping limits artificially low helps keep the state and local coffers full.

Please see http://www.motorists.org/issues/speed/index.html for more info on setting limits . . .
