Same here, I have a 50" Elite 768p plasma and a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD. I'll take the plasma any day of the week for better black level, better colors, smoother motion, and better off-axis viewing. Also, you really don't need 1080p in the 40" or so range as you'll never be able to pick up on the difference unless you're sitting about 2 feet away from it. Don't buy into the marketing hype.

If you have a room with alot of light go with LCD. A darker room go with Plasma. When you get a 40" you'll with you would have purchased a 50". Go as big as you can afford.

I spent over a year looking and searching! I decided upon my 57" Mitisubishi DLP, the Sony XBR series came in a close second. I wanted a big screen and got it. My blacks are outstanding and when I view it in 1080p WOW!!! I did get the TV tuned and that made a huge difference.

We have a 50" pioneer elite plasma 1080. I also get to look at a 42" dlp - there is no comparison.

However the dlp is way less money.

I'd also go with lcd over dlp. And I wouldn't buy anything smaller than 50". m2c

We have a 55 inch plasma and the only time it looks good is on HD channels. I would go with a 1080p DLP right now if I had to do it over again.

DLP? Sure they are cheap but have very poor picture resolution compared to plasma and LCD and very few manufacterers are investing in DLP. They also have a very poor off axis picture. My first choice is a quality plasma from either Pioneer or Panasonic and next would be an LCD from either Samsung, Sony or Sharp. If room lighting is hard to control then LCD would be the logical choice but for over all picture quality with moderately controlled lighting, then plasma is my favorite. I currently have a Pioneer 50" plasma and a 40" Samsung LCD.

I was just looking at new TV's a few days ago...believe it or not, I have a 13" CRT that needs replacing after I graduate in a few months. I've been leaning towards Panasonic's TH-42PZ700U:

TH-42PZ700U - Plasma HDTVs - Shop and Compare at Panasonic

42" plasma, 5000:1 contrast, native resolution of 1920x1080 ("Full HD"...stupid marketing terms...basically it'll do 1080p without any odd scaling), and it gets great reviews (the big selling point on this one is supposed to be the amazing black level, and the overall picture quality for that matter; the main cons are that it doesn't have a load of settings to tweak, and the green it displays is shifted a little toward the yellow end of the spectrum). It was actually Cnet's pick for best 33-42" TV (here's the link: Best 5 HDTVs we've reviewed - CNET Reviews )

You can pick it up for right under $1400 online. Just another model to consider if you're still looking at plasma sets. They also have a 50" version of that model, but its street price is roughly $800 more, and IMO, that's a huge price difference; that'll buy a decent receiver or a nice pair of speakers.

Noticed several reviews point out that the TV has a common problem, something related to the power supply that causes some of them to fail after a month or so. At any rate, Panasonic sounds like they're pretty good about sending people out for warranty work, but still something I thought was worth pointing out.

I have a 50" plasma and so far the only issue I have is the heat/watts it uses. It throws some serious heat and use 585 watts. LCD ia less then half, but the pictures is better on plasma I feel.

I only bought it new (vizo) for $750. Don't ask!

It has been proven that plasmas do not generate the high wattage use versus lcd's that people claim. LCD's are always generating the same watt usage no matter what, while plasma's only use high power on very bright screens. Tests have shown the the average plasma doesn't use much more power than an lcd.

Well it can be proben or not. I have a 60 LCD and a 50 plasma and walk with 5 feet other either one and the plasma you can FEEL the heat bigtime. Plus a "kill-a-watt" meter it will show what uses more.

Even if it was a significant difference it would offset in your energy bill as where else can you get a heater that puts out a quality picture also.
