Can Meguiar's #81 be used over AIO without removing the AIO layer? Does AIO by itself over any protection or last as long as something like Meguiar's #16?

AIO is best used as a paint cleaner. It should be the step after polishing and prior to using a sealant, wax or glaze. Some people say that it has protective qualities, but I have never seen that. I still say it looks best as a paint cleaner and that's about it. I don't know anybody that just slaps AIO on all by itself anyway.

If you use AIO over #81 then it is going to remove any thing that #81 left behind. So any fillers or oils that are on the surface will be cleaned off. Since #81 is mostly oils and fillers anyway, I don't think there would be much point in following it up with AIO.

If AIO does have any protective qualities in it, then I can almost guarantee you that they are stronger than #16. Any synthetic is going to be more durable than a carnauba. I still wouldn't use AIO for protection, but I guess it doesn't hurt. The next step after AIO should be to put down a sealant with some real protection qualities to it. Something like UPP, SG, WG, or even NXT and #20 would be good choices. Any sealant would work great and be more durable than #16.

I've been using AIO by itself on my wifes white Camry for years and it's an excellent protectant. I apply it twice a year and use it diluted in between details and the car looks incredible. I live in Wisconsin and the winters are pretty nasty. On my black Dakota, I use a polymer sealant with the diluted AIO as a quick detail spray and the truck looks stunning. I've heard many people say that AIO does not have any protective qualities and after trying countless products, I feel that almost nothing else compares.

I agree with mark. I find that AIO has good protective properties...thats why its called All In One instead of paint cleaner. In my personal experience, I have used it by itself and found it works well in a pinch. Also, check the CMA website, they say you can get 6 months of protection out of AIO alone!!! I agree that its best when topped with another sealant or a carnauba, but its still good on its own.

agree with previous posts, AIO provides VG acrylic protection but for the very best protection it can be covered with a sealant as listed.

Is a "paint cleaner" different from a "polish" ?? I thought AIO's cleaning abilities meant you DIDN'T need a polisher, like PB PP ??

On my car, I've been doing: (1) wash (2) clay (3) PB PP or AIO (4) SG or EX-P depending on (3).

Polishes are generally abrasive. AIO is non abrasive unless you count the chemical abrasives that do the cleaning. It doesn't do anything for swirls, so you will still need something for those if you have them.
