K & N Cabin filters

I've been through the K&N filter phase and it takes longer to clean and re oil than replacing the filter.

I just looked at the cabin filter for my car and it $47 + $14 for the 8 oz cleaning kit

I can pick up a Fram febreeze filter for $14 locally that works just as good if not better.

I'm not a big K&N fan. I'm actually a fan of amsoil filters that are also cleanable but a kit is not needed to maintain them. Compressed air is all that is needed.
 
The cost savings might sway me if they make 'em for my Audis, but generally I'mwith The Guz on this...life's too short to wash out filters. (got additional reasons for not using their air filters.)
 
Related, but not about the K&N, I've found that the cheap "normal" paper filter works better than the 3x cost charcoal activated one. Unless you drive in a smoggy or stinky area, skip the charcoal, as the paper has a higher CFM.
 
As far as power is concerned, there is literally no difference unless you get a short ram or cold air intake system for your vehicle and even that wont guarantee any noticeable performance increases without tuning. A majority of vehicles frown upon K&N filters specifically because their oiled, depending on if they use a AIT sensor or MAF/MAP etc. Any sensors between the filter itself and the intake manifold would ultimately be covered in oil and damaged.

That is the reason I run a AFE DRY FLOW air filter in my Xterra. Cleanable and NO OIL!!
 
That`s the primary reason why I don`t use `em. And don`t get me going on "CIA"s that don`t actually do much, or even perform as well as the stock setup IRL (no matter what they can "prove" under controlled conditions). There`s just so much BS out there....
 
I considered the K&N cabin filters until I saw the price. For an air filter, I ended up getting a TruXP air filter from Auto Anything.
 
IMO K and N are a joke. I promptly pulled the one in my S10 and put in a regular one. Fact, if anybody wants it, it`s theirs, lol.

I have a dry CAI filter on my Challenger (Mopar branded part but manufactured by AEM IIRC).

As for the arguments on the performance increase (or lack thereof), I admit that I bought it for the sound. :dnaughty
 
K & N Cabin filters

I`ve never changed a cabin filter in my life. Not quite sure why I would need to do this. I`ve never noticed any restriction in the HVAC system...

I don`t believe these filters do anything in reality - unless you live in the dust bowls or something.

That being said, I loathe K & N air filters. Those things are the cause of more driveability, CEL, & MAF sensor problems than any thing else out there.

Plus, they don`t filter as well as factory filters. The horsepower claims are likely bogus, and unnoticeable if not. Washing and oiling and old filter is just stoopid IMHO, and you can prolly just order a paper filter that will work better from Amazon for the price of the oil.

The BEST filter of any kind for any application IMHO is always the OE filter.

Above is a picture of neglected cabin filters from the xterra forum! LOL. They should be replaced once a year. For $15 it`s cheap insurance your breathing clean air!

Not to mention it`ll help the car NOT lean out and blow up. I`ve actually seen a clogged intake system cause detonation.. :wacko:

Completely agree. These things can get quite nasty trapping all sorts of nasty stuff including pollen, small droppings from trees, small bugs, grass clippings from careless gardeners with blowers, etc. .......and yes, even dust which even though you may not live in a "dust bowl" can still add up. Obviously, not all are created so some filter better than others, but IME they work. Keeps all that nasty stuff from getting blown through your evaporator, vents and into the cabin.

^ you people know the dirtier a filter gets the better it works (filters)?

Can anyone point me to a single incident of a vehicle problem caused from and dirty cabin filter?

(And by "dirty", I mean normal use, not like someone drove their car through a swamp or something)

...and if you think it makes the inside of the car "stink" - I`ve replaced a lot of ENGINE air filters and have never noticed and odor from any of them.
