I have one here that I use for sanding purposes only. It has a relatively short stroke, and moves at a very high rate of speed. I, personally, wouldn't go near my car with it, but someone may feel differently.
 
Well, you can control the speed, but not like you can with a polisher. You can adjust the air pressure which controls your max speed, and then you can alter the amount you engage the "trigger", if you will, which alters the amount of air that passes through the sander, but I couldn't imagine trying to control it on anything other than a flat surface.
