Just purchased Chicago Electric Rotary at HF

Well I pulled the trigger and decided to get one of the Chicago Electric rotraries from Harbor Freight. I couldn't pass up the deal. They have them on sale for $29.99 and the model I got has the cheap backing plate, bonnets, etc. I also had a coupon for $5.00 off a purchase of $50.00 or more. Of course, I ended up getting more stuff lol.

I have read through tons of threads on backing plates and pads.

Can someone that has these one of these rotaries recommend a good backing plate and what size foam pads would work the best with these models???

Same situation as you. Most would say smaller pads are easier to control. Bigger pads (7.5 +) are harder to control.Get molded rubber urethane for the heat and flexibility. Got the AG 6 inch pad for my tufted LC 8.5 pads and for future LC VC 7.5 Pads.

Should I just go with the regular LC or Megs 6.5 inch foam pads ????? I was thinking that way I could just switch them out with my PC.

That's what I do..... I bought a 5" backing plate and when I use the rotary I just use my PC pads (LC, Meg's, and Propel).

Pat--which rotary did you get the 90820 or 46507 or 92623?

I got the 92623. However the 46507 was also on sale for $29.99. I like the handle on the 92623 a little better. I figure it would give me better control.

The instore price is $49.99. They are on special per their sales ad for $29.99.

I checked and had both scanned at the store.

I just bought the exact same unit (92623) as well. I went and bought a Meguiar's WD-64 backing plate to use with my 6.5" Meg's pads from the PC. I haven't had any problems with them throwing pads across the room like the Meguiar's DA plate. That's the setup I would have to recommend since it hasn't caused me any troubles yet (aside from my still not being able to totally prevent buffer hop on my practice pannel!!)

I also got one of these on sale and I like how it handles but does anyone know what the rpm's these run at. I look on the manual that comes with it but there is no rpm's. I would like to know because when people talk about doing a vehicle they refer to rpm's and these only have numbers on them.

Really good question -- I haven't been able to find that info either.

I've been trying to find out the RPM info also. I have found another thread where someone setting 1 is about 1000RPM and each number increases it ~400RPM. I don't know how accurate it is and how much this varies from unit to unit. I'm trying to figure out an experiment I can run without investing much $ to determine the RPMs. In the mean time, when I finally get a chance to use it I figure I will start off at 1 and if it isn't doing much I'll just increase from there.

i was looking at the 46507 but HF's site no longer shows it on there, has it been discontinued? If so, which should I get now, I was juiced because the 46507 was on sale for $24.99 about a week and a half ago but my local store did not have any in stock but they said the sale was going until the 26th

Why not go with the 92623??? It has a better handle I think than the 46507 and comes with a cheap backing plate and pad (not like I would use it anyway on the car). My HF had both. Can't go wrong with either for $24.99.

I bought the CE Rotory from HF last winter. I have a different one though, has the same looking handle as the Vector one, guess HF doesn't sell that one anymore. The 92623 looks better though and i wish i waited. Better RPM range too. Oh well, I have used mine a few times now and it has worked good so far. I have the Meguiars 5" W-64 backing plate on it and I have used both LC 7.5" VC pads and Meguiars Flat 6.5" pads. So far I like the Meguiars Flat pads better. I get less splatter/sling with them then the LCs. Easier to get around with the smaller pad too. As for the RPMs, I beleive mine is varible from 1000-3000 rpms and it has 6 speed settings, so i just divided the 2 together to figure out which setting was what rpm. Mine came out to be that each setting was 400 rpm difference. 1=1000, 2=1400, 3=1800 etc... all the way to 3000

Hey Pat, does your 92623 sound like a popcorn maker when you're running it? It kinda makes me nervous, especially at higher speeds with all the crackling noises. :nixweiss
