Just ordered my Makita...now what?

After a lot of deliberating I finally decided to order a rotary. I was choosing between the Makita and the Metabo and ended up going with the Makita to save some money. Anyway, I can't wait to test it out, but I still need to get a backing plate and some pads for it.

What are your recommendations? If you were starting over and had to buy a new plate and pad combo what would you pick? Also, should I go with a 6 in pad or an 8 in pad? Thanks for the help!

Haven't tried Schliegle, but I personally get on very well with a Meguiars backing plate, and the Meguiars foam pads - I find the foam in the finshing and polishing pads to be effective and also very forgiving which is ideal when starting out with the rotarym or when navigating complex cureves in cars - like Jag bonnets for example. Personally, I'd kick off with 6" pads and build your confidence and then step up to 8" pads.

There's the Edge sytem too, hard to beat that perfect centering every time. I have a couple backing plates for my LC pads, but I use the Edge about 70% of the time.

Cant you get a 6" backing plate to be able to use 6.5" pads and then also you can use that same backing plate to run some 8" pads later on. I'd rather purchase one backing plate so I can use both.

I'm tight on $$ so having one backing plate to me would be financially cheaper. All you really have to do is be careful so the backing plate doesnt hit the paint...
