Jetta wouldnt start up.

got an old *** 90 jetta and it wouldnts start up. guage lights turns on but no ticking sound when trying to start car.. what could be all the problems possible? im thinking its just the starter but i thought whenever a starter goes out.. it'll still tick when you try to start it.

The starter solenoid is what ticks. It lets the gear engage onto the flywheel.

Before taking the starter off, make sure the car isn't in drive. The Neutral Safety Switch on AT's won't let the car start in any gear other than park or neutral. Sounds stupid, but you wanted some possible answers.

I would first make sure the cables going to and from the battery, starter solenoid, and ignition switch are all tight and uncorroded.

The battery may meter out good but it might not be able to hold a load. I've had this happen several times with a battery. The meter said it was good but when you put a load on it, it was bad.

Just another idea, Wes
