Jet Black 2007 BMW 328i

Thanks everybody.

Yes, Jet Black is the exception in the BMW line. It is (generally) very soft, mars easily and shows all defects. Because it mars so easily, you often have to compound to remove defects and then can need multiple polish steps to get it to finish right. I was rather fortunate here.

Most of the other BMW paints are comparatively quite hard.

Agreed, there is a significant difference between Jet Black and Black Sapphire (almost completely different ends of the spectrum).

That said, even Jet Black is different depending on whether it is a US manufactured car or a European car. I have worked on a couple of Jet Black bimmers that were as hard as any other BMW paint.

Agree with this, Saphire black is usually easy mode car, but I've seen jet black ones you couldnt wipe polish off with a brand new mf towel and QD spray with out marring it up..... Then I did a 2010 750i JB that had the hardest paint I've ever seen on a bmw kinda strange lol

Nice. That would have taken me 5 days.
Is JB BMW paint really any different to work with? My BMW is black sapphire metallic & I don't have any problems removing defects or finishing perfect. Did you notice any difference?

Until you do one, you wouldn't know........................

BMW JB is a full time job.

Thanks everybody.

yep

:yourrockOMG the work speaks for itself! You are in the groove Mike. Did you forsee the end result or were you as amazed at the reflections as we are. I'd say you are really in tune with the products and processes you use, again great work!

Thanks.

I know what I want it to look like when done. What I generally leave out of my showcase threads is the number of test spots/products I try first. The good part about having most of what Autopia Car Care sells is that I can normally find (or make up) a combo that gets the job done in a step or 2. Also, MF pads really leveled the playing field and allow enthuiasts like me to approach the work of the great professionals on this site like Todd, Joe, Andrew, Rasky, (oh, no, this list could get really long)....

That being said, some do exceed expectations.

Thanks, Dhaval.

3 coats of UPGP 45 min apart will approach Klasse HGSG in terms of longevity. 6+ months of Central Tx summers. In normal places, that is close to a year. ;)

If you like the "candy" look, it is the WOWA that gets you there.

That black looks awesome, nice work! Do you give lessons on how to get black to look like that? To bad you didn't live in Mn as I would be looking for some lessons. That is what I am working on learning towards getting that look out of my car and I have a lot of learning yet to do.

Dean.

Thanks.

I actually do help the local aspiring owner/detailers when I can. A strong believer in Mike Philips' "Each one teach one" challenge.

But MN in winter may be a bit much for this TX boy. ;)

That is great that you do that. I really like this site since I joined a couple months ago. I have learned a lot from the threads here from you and all others that post. Yeah, Mn can be cruel, in the summer we can get as hot as TX and in the winter it can get as cold as the North Pole. Last year it was a mild winter and we barely seen temps below zero. This year it snowed 6" of snow a month ago, which in my 48 years on this earth I don't ever recall that much snow in the middle of October, and the last week or 2 temps have been running in the teen's over night with a couple single digit nights and mid 20's daytime. Yesterday and for the next week the temps are supposed to be in the upper 30's like it should be. Luckily I have a garage I can warm up to detail in and today or tomorrow I am trying my hand at rinseless washing for the first time. Bad thing though is I can warm up the garage but the surface temp of the car takes so long to warm up after it has been sitting outside or all night in a 35 degree environment.

Dean. :bigups

Mild winter: only a few days below 0?? 50s tend to be an inside day here.

Tip - use warm water for your rinseless. It helps.

Usually in mid January we have a 2 week cold snap where we will only see -20F for highs and -30F plus for lows and then add a 20 MPH wind and that adds windchill to about -50F plus. You learn to take the good with the bad.

Yes, that is the plan to use warm to hot water for washing. With the temps now I don't have a problem warming the garage to over 60 it is when it get around the zero mark it makes it harder to warm up.

Thanks,
Dean. :snowman:

LOL Mike!!!

I did 2 rinseless washes outside yesterday morning in 40* weather in jeans and a teeshirt. I even did an application of Sonus Acrylic Glanz on my car.

I would love to have good blood circulation to be outside in a t-shirt when it is 40F outside.

Seriously true! When it's 60 degrees outside in Gainesville, no one goes to class because it's too cold lol!

Yeah, you people in the south, LOL, I get a kick out of watching the Daytona 500 in the Spring when the temp in Florida happens to be in the 50's to 60's and see everyone dressed in Parkas. I live for the 60 to 70 degree temps. Question what would happen if it snowed in FL? :lol2:

Truth be told I am actually jealous of you that live in the south but only during the winter months. I really don't think I could handle the heat and the high humidity in the summer. :bigups
