hi all, i came across this website while trying to do some research on how to restore the paint on my jaguar 1999 xj8 vanden plaz. it is black and is kept outside for a majority of the day(parking lot for school/hockey). the paint is showing fading/scratch swirls. here is an upclose picture of the paint(keep in mind i haven't washed it in a few weeks :( )

what do i need to buy/do to give the car that deep, glassy, black shine that you see in showroom car?

There are many different products you can buy, as well as a few different ways to go about doing the work. Judging by the picture, it looks like you will need an aggressive compounding to remove the deep defects followed by a light polish to bring back the gloss/remove haziness from the compounding. I would suggest reading, reading, reading, and reading some more on this forum to help decide which products and processes you want to use. I'm sure alot of people will give their suggestions, opinions about how to go about it. My opinion, from looking at the picture, would be to go with a compound like M105 on a MF pad to remove the defects and then something like M205 on white or black pad, or maybe a MF pad to follow up, all done with a DA polisher. Of course this is just from looking at the pic, what I would actually do depends on doing some test passes on the vehicle itself first to see what works best on that particular paint.

i was recommended the HD care care line of products and the machine that goes with it(about 220 bucks) what do you think of using those?

That would also be a good choice. It comes with a good DA polisher. I'd also get UNO Advanced Cut and HD Polish to finish with.

BTW, I own a British Green '97 X300 Sovereign...best car I've owned.

Big, welcome aboard!

Would you ever consider farming this work out to a local professional in your area? It may be the least expensive way to get the result you desire if you don't have the time, tools, temperament or training to perfect the paint.

i would consider it! it just depends on how much it will cost. i do not know of any good places or people to go to that won't break the bank. any suggestions?

There are several people, a couple stand-outs, in your immediate area that can offer exceptional results without breaking the bank. They will create a finished product for less $$$ than you are likely to.

I think you've got to consider how the car is cared for in the future and what's going to change in terms of protecting and preserving the finish before you spend $0.01.
