ITS THE PITS! What is going on???

Well, misery loves company.
I'll post back tomorrow after I show the problem to some paint shops in town. Thanks to all for helping on this thread. Many intersting comments and I'm determined to find out for all of us as much as I can as this seems to be more common then I would have guessed.

HERES THE FINAL PITIFUL STORY FROM A LOCAL EXPERT PAINT SHOP

He said the pits were solvent pop because it was a repainted hood! He really didn't see the dozens of little ones but pointed out some larger ones like in the close up picture above, so I didn't push the point of the dozens per inch small pits I was seeing in "certain" light. Probably exposed during polishing.

Since this was a repaint I bet I didn't do it any good sealing the surface with EX-P and #16. I thought it was factory cured paint. I wonder what will happen now to the paint? Should I strip the EX-P, etc. and let it cure awhile? Its about 11 months old now.

Couldn't see the pits outside (too much fresh VM, EX-P, CMW, Quick Shine 'bling-bling' I'm sure) so the car was pulled into their shop. It took the paint expert about 10 seconds to point out the whole hood (where the "pits" are) was repainted. He also pointed out that the orange peel was greater there then on the rest of the car. [I thought I had bought a "new car" with less than 20 miles on it !!!] He then made my day by pointing out the repaint wasn't even the right white, but had a touch of "yellow" in it. The good part--- he said it wasn't too bad a repaint job and when outside the mismatched color didn't show at all. Lucky me. :ticked

Well. I'm going to enjoy the car for the next 30,000 miles, run the rubber off the tires, drive it hard and sell it before the warranty is gone. I feel much better. :drunk

Now I'll start dreaming about that next car and color......"Arrest Me" Red or "Bring on the Pain" Black?

Many thanks to all who contributed and way to go on the "solvent pop" and "repaint" calls! :cool Thanks.:bigups

Thanks for the work and the report Sveta. :bigups

I'm not convinced that's the same as what's on my Z3. I'll keep trying to get some pics that show it. :dunno

Thanks for your report Sveta. I have unfortunately been to a few body shops in my day and I am always surprised by the number of "brand new" cars (dealer stickers, foam) that have been damaged and are being repaired. These cars are probably sold to unknowing customers. Then, thinking its fully cured factory paint job, an individual such as yourself will seal up the paint and end up doing it more harm than good.

I guess the when you buy a newcar you have to bring a body shop guy with you to inspect the vehicle for repairs. I would seriously consider taking ths up with the dealership and/or maufacturer of your car.

Aloha,
Robert

Unfortunately the factory paint process is not all that better than repaints...I posted this in another thread some time ago about how often a panel or more has to be repainted before it leaves the assembly plant. Factory paint defects are very common these days and they do a quick buffing(thus factory swirls) or repaint as needed. After a long conversation with a friend of mine who manages a Ford plant, the chances of getting a factory paint job without faults is slim and none. I found thin spots on my new Equinox , where primer can be seen, I saw the same on areas of my new van I got about a year and a half ago.
The worst I have seen is the Street Rod I mentioned earlier and they popped out after several months, and were not visable when the owner picked up the car from the painter. He also told me that he had polished and waxed the car a few months after painting and they became more pronounced after polishing. Under the right lighting I'm sure many people will come to the same conclusion...painting a vehicle is far from a perfect job without a perfectionist doing the painting:)

Its not uncommon for new car dealers to repaint sections of new vehicles . I spent my teens years working at a new car dealer . Cars and trucks that get damaged in transport to the dealer windup in the body shop for repairs and back on the lot . The customer isn't aware and most likely never told about repairs that were made . I'd beat money this still happens today. Accident's happen ,paints get scratched when that happens its off to the bodyshop. This might be what happened to your vehicle .
