Is it the act of applying or buffing off??

When you are applying the wax or polish how hard do you push?? Is it the application or the buffing that causes the shine? I realize this is a basic question but I really am not sure.

It is neither. What causes the shine is the polishing process and the wax then 1) enhances the shine and gloss and 2) protects.

This application process varies. One may need to apply a great deal of pressure in the first steps of hand rubbing the finish and then increasingly lighten up on the pressure. I would not look at it as "pushing" the product on the paint but rather massaging the product into the paint.

Much like working with a rotary. If you "push" the rotary then the pad covers a larger area than it can properly work. In other words the rotary, pad and product work by way of heat and friction but if you move the rotary too fast then there is no heat being applied to the paint, it's just being smeared around and introducing swirls.

Sheesh, sorry for that rambling on.:)
