Is it possible to start a mobile detailing business for under 200 dollars.

You THINK you like this detailing business until the first time you "mess up" a friend-of-a-friend's vehicle and the party does not want to pay you for what you have "done" or worse, takes you to small claims court and gets a judgment against you for you to PAY someone else to "fix" your "mistakes".

I am not dissing the Original Poster for his attempt to start a business and make money. He has more moxy than those "protesters" who Occupy Wall Street; at least he is doing something about his financial situation.

Unfortunately, the reality is that most here do not view this as a legitimate business plan or even a business with so little capital investment. And even I am questioning his skills and abilities with my remarks noted above. That said, at least the OP is TRYING to gain some experience in doing vehicle detailing and everyone has to start somewhere.

Your success will depend on your development of those skills and how much people are willing to pay you for those skills based on the outcome (appearance) of their vehicles. Most successful business start-ups are accomplished with referral business by word-of-mouth. If you're good and provide a reasonable value in what you charge for your service, your customers will come back and recommend you to their friends.

Some might suggest working for a volume detail shop or at a car dealership to gain this experience, but unfortunately what is thought of as "vehicle detailing" is NOT to the Autopian-standard of detailing and those bad habits/practices learned at these places are often re-created when someone desides to start a "detailing" business or service on their own. (But I digress; it's what keeps many Autopian Professionals and weekend-warriors busy and profitable).

You will definitely want to get insurance, too. It's not a matter of "if" you'll eventually damage a car, but "when" and "how bad". Properly insuring your business might very well be the difference between staying in business or not.
