i'm about to get hip replacement surgery so i won't be doing any detailing for a while but i notice some guys using iron x. first, why do you use it, what does it do and how do you use it. did a search and couldn't find anything on it...

IRON-X is a pre-treament/decontamination product that removes iron particulate from the paint. You simply mist it on to the surface, watch as it turns purple, then rinse away.

The advantage is that it can penetrate below the clear coat and remove particulate that normal claying cannot. I have some pictures (and I'm waiting on David Fermani to send me some video clips) we took of it in action on a already clayed Maserati.

By deep cleaning the paint you are better preparing it to accept a product and/or removing any contamination that could affect the polishing process as you abrade into the surface.

IronX is used to dissolve / eat away any iron deposits in your paint. More specifically for the deposits that are below the surface that clay will not touch or remove. This way they don't stat in the their and start to create rust spots. The use is very easy spray it on cool dry paint let it set for a few minutes until the reaction is complete and the rinse off. If you check YouTube you can find videos of it in use. It sprays on clear from the bottle and the turns red as it reacts with the iron deposits. It is very effective.

I have used it before claying to help reduce the amount of contaminates the clay must pick up. But I have been thinking that it may be more effective to use it after claying in case there are bonded contaminates that are covering up "pockets" of iron deposits or rail dust.

I have to get a bottle of it soon, been hearing about it now for 2 years and got to try it on my own.
 
Sonax (and Griot's) offers a similar iron-detecting product, but based on my experience I think it is fair to say that IronX is superior. The Sonax wheel cleaner turned the wheels reddish purple and the wheels looked great. But when I sprayed the IronX on the same wheel moments later I was amazed by how much it picked up that the Sonax did not. It also made the wheel look visibly brighter and virtually spot free. Similar story with IronX on the paint after using a mild clay bar (which picked up a lot!). It's especially active on the area below the gas cap. I now use it before the clay bar. Great stuff! The verdict is still out on the IronX brand wash, though.
