Interesting news on HRE Wheels

I agree. They look killer, but for whatever money you pay for them, probably a good $6k minimum, they don't seem worth it. I wonder if the 3 piece wheels have this problem too?

seems to me the first link says it was a kinesis wheel traced to a bad refinishing process. i've known way to many people who have owned hre's and tracked them with no problem so oh well. kinesis wheels are stout as hell too, but like they said a bad refinishing process.

I don't get it. There are millions of wheels out there including couple of track proven wheels (SSR, Rays Engineering, BBS, etc...), why would someone go out and choose HRE to track it? Not to mention, one of the most expensive wheel to track it? Does the owner got money to throw on the ground or something? It seems to me they're just trying to prove that HRE is not all that and trying to get HRE go bankrupt or something..

It isn't the first time that I've heard of them failing. Not good for an exclusive wheel. I am not sure if they are cut out for racing, though.

Wonder if it's *all* HREs or just a particular series  I had them on my Mallett C5 and Mallett Cars uses them on all their tuned 'vettes. With all the track time their cars have had I've never heard of a single wheel failure...

They just seem overly hyped.

Eh, I dunno, what *isn't* overly hyped these days ;)

At least with HRE you can get 'em fixed/replaced when you need it. I've had wheels from BBS/RONAL/ROH/others that were discontinued and I had to replace them all after one got damaged. Got so common that I started buying at least one spare wheel whenever I put on aftermarket ones. Got expensive with different size front/back fitments.

hadboosttroy- IMO any refinishing or other repairs could explain the whole thing. I'd sure never take any repaired wheel on the track.

BUT, OTOH, now that I think about it I do remember something about a recall of HRE wheels back in maybe 1999-2000 or so. The ones on my 'vette were *not* included in the recall though, I called Chuck Mallett about it and he said it was only one run of a different series, size, or something like that (I forget the specifics). In that case also, they were determined to be unsafe for track/etc. use. HRE contacted me directly as a registered owner of their product, which I thought was pretty good. I know, we oughta expect such service, but it's not all that common.

I'm a very visual person ...&....These are great looking wheels ...so :nixweiss :argue argue and complain about them all you want......We stiil like them......They perform well too! :spot

I had heard some of this before. I went with Fikses and have been VERY happy. I think both are good selections though.
