interesting facts about leather care by lexol

I've used:
303AP
Lexol Cleaner
Lexol Conditioner
1Z Cleaner/Conditioner
Leatherique PC/RO

I haven't had any issues with any but they each have at least trait or two that I like.

I really like my UIGP on clean finished leather.

In my research,

Leather Masters contains vegetable and animal fats per the MSDS sheet

1z uses a natural wax as a barrier

Four Star contains lanolin (a secretion from animals which is similar to a wax). On protected leather, it acts a barrier but will soften natural leather

All the above are water based products.

thanks bunky for the research. I guess that rules out leather masters for me and the lanolin ones

The 1z from what I read contains silicone waxes and Ive always heard silicone is bad for leather . Any thoughts on that? Thanks/:)

I followed up with Lexol after reading the article and other readings on the internet. I got the impression that Lexol would not do much (in terms of conditioning) protected leather until the top coating (urethane based) degrades but none the less was safe (not harmful) on protected leather.

You are correct. Protected leather, like used in most automobiles, will not absorb anything into the underlying leather. All you need to do is clean it with a mild soap, and spray it with ANY vinyl protectant to protect from the UV rays. It is a waste of money buying synthetic sperm whale oil, or mink oil, or Lanolin or neetsfoot...... or Oil of Olay for that matter, "cause it ain't gonna" do a darn thing except make your wallet thinner.

From what ive read this is true!

Ive also come across more pleather lately now that I know what to look for . Vinylex has so far looked really nice on pleather. Im going to start using it on the coated leather too and see how it looks and feels.

I never would've thought my hands have been covered in sperm all these years. Theres a good chance I may have rubbed my lips with this stuff on my hands. Does this make me gay /:)

I don't know about making you gay. But it does make me wish I hadn't read the post. j/k.:D

Hi. Is Lexol really that good? I have also been looking to invest on some products and I found this one on leather care which i thought was ok. What do you think? Any feedback or input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Just my opinion and from doing a few experiments - ditch the Lexol for leather, the Vinylex is great for weather-stripping, (clean it first) then apply.

On coated leather I just use a mild soap, and rinse. I dress it with Optimum Protectant, man -be sure you shake that stuff up first cause it separates like that oil/vinagar salad dressing!

I got a sample in a trade that also had separated just like you stated. I had tried it once, did not like the results (smelled too strong to me), and tossed it thinking it was bad.

I eventually asked Dr G. when I was talking to him a Detail Fest and he speculated the sample had spoiled (too hot, cold, old).

Hey Al, I bought a gallon so I ain't throwing it away, just shake it up - you know - like Thunderbird and grapefruit juice, yeah right like you never heard that one!

Seriously, I've noticed lots of products that separate over time, BFWD for one. When I worked in the lab (textiles) one of the first things I was told was to shake up every dye before using it.

Optimum after "shaken, not stirred" works great, the smell ain't bad and seems to go away after a few minutes. About the only Optimum product I really like.

Hi Adam, welcome to TID. I don't have any experience with the product you linked too but please read the rules regarding linking to other websites. We have to be vigilant in this practice because there are people who will use this site (that properautocare.com pays for) to promote other products and unscrupulously try to advertise with out paying for it.
