Insides of wheel details

Hey guys, any help would be greatly appreciated, I've always wanted to know what some of you guys use to clean inside of the actual wheel...solvents, brushes, lets hear it, I'd really like to step up my wheel/tire detailing abilities and order a couple things to help me get inside of the wheel, it really sets it off I think...

I use the bristles of my wheel face brush to get as much as I can and then a MF.

I used to use Meguiers Hot wheel cleaner or whatever it was called, worked well..too expensive for how much you get. Now I presoak with ONR and am good to go.

For really nasty wheel insides, Meg's Wheel Brightener works very well. Agitate with a brush and most of the grime should come off. Note that with some wheels, like ones with many spokes and small openings to access the inside of the wheel, cleaning in that area just isn't possible sometimes.

To do it the easiest way, on my own cars, I just pull the wheels and then use my normal wheel cleaner (if needed) and brushes. After they are clean I seal them with wheel sealant (Poorboy's), KSG, or Zaino. Once they are clean and sealed it's much easier to keep up with them using small brushes or reaching in with a MF using normal car wash soap.

Kind of wander around a Wal-Mart, hardware store, Lowes, etc. and look for various brushes you can use in the paint department and even housewares. Just be careful when using some odd items like that, that they won't cause marring on your wheel.

If I can see it, ill clean it. On my personal car, you can see the inside of the wheel easily. I clean the insides really good every month or so. All other cleanings only get the face and small portions of the inside of the wheel that can be seen.

But if you can't see it without removing the wheel, no need to bother.

sorry for the noob question but what marring? what does it look like?

You had better get any Meguiar's brand brushes you want while you still can. they are not going to be making them any more. :(

Meguiar's seems to have had a lot of quality issues with the accessories they've released in the last couple of years. Replacing all the defective products has probably cost them a lot of $$$$.

I have these brushes as well and they work great. However, they do not reach all the way to the back of my wheels.

you must have multi-spoke rims or ones that are like 8.5" wide? :)

I don't know how wide they are but the Meguiar's brush just reaches through to the other side. With the Griot's brushes I have to stick my hand inside the wheel to get all the way to the back. So, I can't reach where the brake caliper is and even when I can reach my hand gets all scratched up from the wheel edges.

My wheels in the rear are 17 x 10.5, sometimes they can be hard to clean due to their depth, but I was looking for a universal brush that might help rid some of the grime that cakes on in the inside of the wheel, I usually find myself with banged up knuckles and cuts on the top of my hand from trying to get inside of the wheel with my bare hands  the meguiars gold class brush looks pretty appealing, cheap too, maybe I'll try it, I'm also going to run up to pep boys/walmar to see what I can find :secret

Basically just anything that induces any fine scratches..... sometimes you don't notice it until the damage is already done and you see them at different angles or lighting.

AG and Pinnacle market a wheel brush 18 inches in length that easily cleans the 19 x 11 rims on my car. The general shape is conical; the bristles are flexible allowing the brush to clear the calipers. Based on my experience, this is an excellent product.

19x11's! :soscared:

Got pics? :bounce

That Meguires brush looks like a winner, although they're not overly cheap here in Australia.

I've recently fitted 22x10's on my car and find with the extra diameter its easy to get to the back lip section from behind with a mitt, but i'll tell you what.... never ever EVER buying spoke style rims again!!! Spent almost 5 hours the other night cleaning and sealing them!

1. loosen lugs

2. jack up car and place on jackstands

3. remove all 4 tires

4. give them a blast of APC at 100%, let soak in to get rid of all the loose stuff

5. give it a quick once over with a nylon brush then rinse

6. give them a blast with Megs Wheel Brightner at 50% dilution

7. aggitate again for a bit (always wearing safety glasses - eyes & acid dont mix well)

8. hose off Wheel Brightner

9. enjoy those showroom clean wheels.

10. the real P.I.T.A. put the tires back on

This is for the brake dust caked back of the wheels only, the fronts are maintained a little better and don't need the same amount of attention. I only do this when I am really bored since it doesnt last long and Im the only one that notices anyway.
