Input on Tire Dressing

I hear alot of raves about Z16 but I am not seeing results. The shine is virtually non-existent after a generous application. I usually go over it AGAIN with another few passes on the tire and the shine is BARELY improved. And I am a "matte" shine kinda guy. Not impressed at all. I used AA Detailer's Advantage with MUCH better results, but its contains silicone and I don't want browning tires. I'll use my Mothers FX next time.

Out of 10:

Shine - 6.5 (way too flat, no sheen at all, pretty much darkens the tire a bit)

Durability 7.8 (descent, but doesn't make up for the lack of shine, looks like I put nothing on the tires).

Scottwax,

Does the Armor All that you use come in the pump style spray bottle, or is it one with a continuous spray trigger?

Personally I love Armor All Extreme Gel, much thinner and easier to apply then Megs Endurance, no sling and perfect look, and I get about 2-3 weeks out of it including rain. I use it on all our vehicles. Cheap too. Meg Endurance High Gloss started turning my white raised letters a purplish tint and it had a thick consistancy that was a pain to apply in A/T suv tires.

I buy it by the half gallon, but this is what the smaller containers look like:

What do you all mean you dilute megs endurance so that its doesnt cling to the rims?

Do you all put tire shine on the rims?

Megs Endurance Gel is kind of thick. When I spray it on the tire some gets on the rims and it's kind of a pain to get off. I don't purposely put it on the rims...it's just overspray.

Which actually brings about a question:

What does everyone use to sheild the rims? Do you simply wipe it off or does anyone use anything?

mose,

I've seen a product that's made out of round, white plastic that you use to cover your wheel while you're spraying your tire dressing (kind of cone shaped with a small handle in the middle to hold it in place as I recall.

You can also make your own by cutting out a circle from a piece of cardboard that's the same diameter as your wheel (like the round cardboard that's under your pizza when you buy one) and putting duct tape or clear plastic packaging tape over both sides of the cardboard to keep it from getting soaked with the tire dressing. Then, just attach some sort of handle, like a small block of wood, to the middle with tape or glue so you can hold it in place while spraying your tire.

One thing to remember is each tire manufacturer seems to handle different dressings differently. Michelin tires for example in my experience seem to make dressings appear more glossy than they do on other brands. I decided to test about a dozen different ones last year, and my favorite out of the bunch was Meguiar's #38. Just my .02 ;)

I have seen those things too. Always wondered if they were worth the money. Yer right though......I could just make some in a few different rims sizes. The duct tape around the edges is a nice idea too!! Thanks bro!!:xyxthumbs

I agree with n2_space. Some dressings just don't seem to work well with some tires :nixweiss

I use Z16 most of the time, though I'm still using up the gallons of Griot's (original) vinyl/rubber dressing and a few others I have on hand. The Z16 usually asts a long time for me, if I let it soak in a while before I buff off the excess, but on some tires it needs redone after almost every wash.

I apply with the tire swipes that TOL sells, the ones with replaceable pads and a rotating handle. This makes it pretty easy to keep the dressing where you want it. Then I wipe off any excess after it's had a chance to penetrate. If I do get any dressing on the wheels I clean it off with some FK425, which I usually use on the wheels after every wash anyhow.

I tried some Endurance gel on my mechanic's Benz last year (when I borrowed it for a few months) and that stuff a) was a pain to apply because it's so thick and/but b) lasted forever. Looked OK too, and I'm a matte/satin guy for whom it would usually be a bit too shiny. For *that* application is was a good choice- apply it once and forget about it.

I went to the carshow about 3 weeks ago and pick NO mess tire coating...Its in an aersol bottle, I have used it once and it doesnt fling stuff all over the car and it stays on its been on for 2 weeks now its snowed 2 times here and rained once and the shine is still there...This is by far the best tire shine I have used and I have used a bunch of them.

Does this work well on vinyl tonneau covers? Would it streak after a rain shower?

It seems to hold up okay but I prefer to use Optimum Protectant Plus on those surfaces because of the more matte finish. The top on the Jeep on the 2nd page of this thread was treated with OPP.

If anyone has not tried the Eiman Fabrik, it is worth the try. Bottle lasts forever and it gives the best shine I have seen with NO SLING.

Armor All Tire Foam. Spray tires and wells. Let sit for 15. Wipe clean with MF glove or towel. Follow with Armor All Tire Gel. 2 weeks durability..........easy.

I can do 4 large SUV's with one can of 2.67 foam. Over 50 vehicle (200 tires) with a bottle of 5.67 Gel.

The foam is like a precleaner. You will be amazed of what it removes from "clean" tire.

Oh yeah. I'm not worthless. Here's pics of this process!!!!

(Surfer uses the same process.)

Ive never used anything better than megs Endurance. Some people dont like it b/c its a gel, not to sure what that has to do with anything? I do find that it take awhile to get my A/T tires looking good. My street tires dont take much time at all though...

Yeah, the Armor All Extreme Tire Shine Gel is great. I originally purchased some to get the snazzy little applicator, but was surprised at the quality of the gel. I don't know why, but I really like the design of the Armor All "upside-down" bottles, too.

The look depends on the tyre compound. Harder ones won't suck it up as much as a UHP soft tyre.

From my testing I like wolfgang, detailers pride (I use it professionally) and the best of all hands down, Sonus.

Bonds properly, never sticky, shilacky looking and you can touch the tyre after 10 mins and it's dry. Doesn't get on your fingers.

Prep is everything though.

Autoglym 07B, Carlack 68 x 2, Sonus x 2 to 3 coats (1 hour bond time between each coat)

No matter how much you drive or on what surface, it may fade a little but will come back again. Even with high pressure water.

Durability is around three months

PIC - 3 x sonus (after above prep) after a month of driving
