Initial Impressions: Muc-Off Split Second Detailer Wax

Introduction:

I haven't done a product review in a while due to the generally unfavorable detailing weather (frequent rains in the middle of our extreme drought). Having the soft spot for BOGO items and QDs, I decided to try this product. I've used a couple of other Muc-Off products and find them to work well & have a pleasant smell and hoped this one would follow suit.

Thanks again to Corey for providing the format.

Product Claims:

Muc-Off Split Second Detailer 1 liter.

From Autopia Car Care site -

"Give your ride a Muc-Off shine quickly!
Keeps your ride looking great.
Use to remove light dust and smudges.
Can be used to aid drying and increase shine.

Muc-Off Split Second Detailer Wax is a quick & easy to use spray-on wax which creates a stunning high gloss 'wet look' shine. Muc-Off Split Second Detailer Wax details your bodywork in seconds leaving behind a protective 'water beading' finish. Use either while the vehicle is still wet (post wash) as a spray on wax or as a detailer to remove light contaminants in between washes. Muc-off's advanced 'high lubricity' naturally derived formula will safely lift off dust or light surface blemishes without the need for a complete clean, perfect if your vehicle gets caught in the rain or has been in storage."

Other Products Used:

CG HFEW
Buckets with Grit Guards
Bone
MF

Preparation:

I've mentioned in other reviews that I generally don't use QDs as QDs but more frequently as drying aids - especially with rinseless washes. That is how I used MO SSDW here. So, pre-soaked panel with CG HFEW, wiped with Bone in snake-pattern and pre-dried with long nap MF dampened with CG HFEW.

Application:

Spray a small amount on paint and spread with clean medium nap MF. Follow with a light buffing with dry short nap MF (or two or three). Directions state not to let dry unbuffed.

Observations:

First, it does keep with the Muc-Off tradition of a pleasant smell.

This is really much more of a spray wax than a QD. At least the ACC website has the complete name - AG stops at Split Second Detailer and I thought it was a QD. After you spread with the first MF, it looks as if you applied a paste wax. It is advertised as a WOWO but I found it to be a WOWOWOWOWOWOWO.... You need to use extremely sparingly because, applied too heavily, you will be chasing streaks for quite a while. It was warm and very humid (raining outside) and that may have contributed to the very slow flashing time. Found I needed to spread with first MF, remove with second MF, buff with third and final walk around with a fourth. I did find that spraying the spreading MF worked better than spraying the paint - is much easier to judge the correct amount to use. As it is readily visible on the paint, you can easily see when you need more on the MF (if you ever need more).

Once you do remove it, you are rewarded with an absolutely beautiful finish - very carnauba looking: glossy, deep and wet. It adds that contrast enhancing property I like in the finish - maybe more than any product I've used.

I didn't take any pics because you've all seen my Sonata gleaming before and I'm sure the subtle difference the MO SSDW makes wouldn't show in the photo.

Does it meet its claims? Mostly - the easy-to-use one was a bit of a stretch.

Comparisons:

Definitely harder to remove than OCW, Pinnacle SLSW & XMT 360 Spray Wax or any other QD or spray wax I've used. Prone to streaking maybe even worse than Klasse HGSG. That being said, the streaks are much easier to remove. I hope I applied it too heavily or the weather or something caused it. That being said, it may be the best looking of any of this type of product I've used, too.

Pros:
1.- Beautiful finish
2.- Beads well (rained on my car again the following morning)
3.- Rather cost effective (especially on BOGO)
4.- Pleasant smell.

????:
1. Durability. My cars get wiped down every week or, at most, two so I'll never know.

Cons:
1.- Hard too remove

Final Observations and Summary:

The truly observant reader may have noticed me hinting that Muc-Off Split Second Detailer Wax is maybe a teensy bit difficult to remove. So it really comes down to whether the resulting finish is worth the effort. I still haven't decided. Will try again (I do have 2l after all) and see if other application techniques or climate conditions improve the ease of use. I'll update if I find something.

Update:

Tried it again today as a drying aid with a rinseless wash. Pretty much the same results. Weather did not seem to be the culprit and neither did application thickness. Being stubborn, I decided to experiment a bit. Leaving it on for several minutes after spreading it neither helped nor had deleterious effects. The secret in removal seems to be to use a MF with a very light spritz of (distilled) water. This removed all streaks and residue. So, IME, the instructions should be something like "Spray lightly on paint. Spread evenly with MF. Buff off with a light spritz of distilled water on separate MF. Admire the beautiful finish." Can easily do a panel or more before buffing.

With this removal method, MO SSDW catapults into the top tier of drying aids in my arsenal.

Nice review Mike.

Based on this I will steer clear of it. I don't want to have to jump through hoops for a drying aid or even a spray wax.
