My name is Tyler Chapman. I am a junior in high school from NC. We are required to do senior projects and to write a research paper. Mine just so happened to be about car detailing because I enjoy doing it. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me so that I can include them in the interview portion of my project.I will also need your name. If so, they will follow.

1. In your opinion, do you think hand washing or using an automatic carwash is better and why?

2. What are the best supplies/materials to use when washing a car?

3. Does handwashing ever leave swirlmarks or light surface scratches?

4. What are the effects of going through an automatic carwash?

5. Do you think handwashing is time-consuming or not?

6. Which is more convenient: handwashing or Automatic Carwash?

7. Does the chemical agents from an automatic carwash cause more damage to your car's surface?

8. is it better to wash the car in the shade or when the sun is shining?

9.What effects does the sun have on your car's exterior?

10. Is it cheaper to handwash or go through an automatic carwash?

11. How often should you have your car washed or detailed?

Double posting????? Please limit to posting in one section. Even though you posted in Car Detailing and got answers there, I would figure the best place for good answers is here in the Pro Detailing section. Good luck on your paper!

Hello Tyler,

Here are some answers to your questions.

1. In your opinion, do you think hand washing or using an automatic carwash is better and why? <span class="style1">Hand washing your car is better for your paints finish because there is less chance for damage to be done by the automatic car wash machines.

2. What are the best supplies/materials to use when washing a car? <span class="style1">That is going to be a personal preference to each detailer. Of course we are going to prefer our product line because that is what we use and sell. I recommend that each detailer try different products and from that find out what products work best for them and there situation.

3. Does hand washing ever leave swirl marks or light surface scratches? <span class="style1">Yes, hand washing can leave light surface scratches on the finish of your paint if you are not careful. Make sure that you always use a clean mitt or sponge when washing your car.

4. What are the effects of going through an automatic carwash? <span class="style1">Vehicles that go through the automatic cloth car washes after time will see an accumulation of light surface scratches.

5. Do you think hand washing is time-consuming or not? <span class="style1">It depends on what you consider time-consuming. I own a hand car wash that can have the outside of a car washed start to finish in about 5 min. If you are washing the car yourself that same job might take you 30 min.- 3 hours depending on how O.C.D. you are.

6. Which is more convenient: hand washing or Automatic Carwash? <span class="style1">They are the same as for the convenience factor. If you are taking your car to a hand wash or automatic place they are going to take about the same amount of time. Maybe slightly longer for the hand car wash, but not much.

7. Does the chemical agents from an automatic carwash cause more damage to your car's surface? <span class="style1">Automatic car washes use a more aggressive soap to clean the cars paint, that in turn is more harsh on the cars paint finish.

8. is it better to wash the car in the shade or when the sun is shining? <span class="style1">If you are washing your car yourself, it is always better in the shade.

9.What effects does the sun have on your car's exterior? <span class="style1">The sun heats up the surface of your paint and in turn depletes the oils in the paint. That is what dry's out your paints finish and will cause oxidation to occur.

10. Is it cheaper to hand wash or go through an automatic carwash? <span class="style1">Taking your car to a hand wash place will be slightly more expensive then an automatic wash. Doing your own hand car wash will be the cheapest way to clean your car.

11. How often should you have your car washed or detailed? <span class="style1">Cars should be washed ever 1 - 2 weeks and detailed every 3-6 months
