I guess experiences vary with air cleaners just like they do with most other things. I have the pleated filters on my HVAC systems, the supposedly good ones. I replace the filter elements regularly and run the fans constantly. But my Ionic Breezes still pick up a *lot* of stuff. There is a TV in the kitchen near the one Ionic Breeze, and its screen never gets *nearly* as dirty as the collection panels do. Not trying to sound like a shill for the Ionic Breeze, and IMO they're awfully pricey.
Heh heh, I just remembered that we also have an Enviracaire HEPA unit that we never bothered unpacking since moving into this house. Maybe I'll put it out in the detailing shop to get some use out of it.
The AprilAire whole-house unit is one of the ones I've considered. But getting two or three of them, and having the ductwork altered to accommodate them (big hassle in our case), is a pretty major expenditure just to lessen the household dusting chores. It'd be different if we were suffering some kind of health issues.
MorBid- You bet you gotta be careful. One of the characteristics of my Beaucerons is that they have an unwavering stare, plus they never get bored watching people. I have them watch the workmen who are in the house; the good guys like having a pair of dogs for company, the questionable guys get nervous as can be and behave themselves
On the (very) rare occasions that the dogs refuse the "make friends" command, those workmen don't come in the house- period.
