IMUS AT IT AGAIN

Posted by Mike Florio on June 23, 2008, 1:31 p.m. EDT

Less than 15 months after losing his gig on WFAN and MSNBC for making racially charged comments regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team, radio icon Don Imus has danced dangerously close to, and arguably over, the line again.

On Monday, Imus had the following exchange with Warner Wolf:

Wolf: “Defensive back Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys. Here’s a guy suspended all of 2007 following a shooting in a Vegas night club.

Imus: “Well, stuff happens. You’re in a night club, for God’s sake. What do you think’s gonna happen in a night club? People are drinking, they’re doing drugs. There are women there, and people have guns. So, there, go ahead.

Wolf: “He’s also been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.

Imus: “What color is he?

Wolf: “He’s African-American.

Imus: “Well, there you go. Now we know.

Last time around, the comments represented a partial effort at humor. This time around, it was a matter-of-fact statement, with no chuckles, yuks, tee-hees, or ha’s. As we see it, if the comment wasn’t overtly and blatantly racist, then what the hell was it?

Maybe we’re wrong on this one. Even so, it was nothing short of stoopid to fly so close to the flame that already burned him once.

UPDATE: A few readers have suggested that Imus was referring to a belief that African-Americans are more likely to be arrested because of police profiling. Reading the transcript might possibly cause a reasonable person to perhaps think that; listening to the audio tends to (in our opinion) rule out any positive spin that could be placed on this one. Besides, if Imus was trying to make a broader social comment regarding the question of whether black men are more likely to be arrested because of their race, he needs to offer up something more substantive than, “There you go. Now we know. Especially in light of the Rutgers thing.

here's the audio... RedLasso - Don Imus on Adam "Pacman" Jones - 6/23/08

what's wrong with this guy, will he ever learn? :down

Who would you trust more with your life? The attention ho Imus or the thug Pacman?

If Imus did not make these comments about this idiot, we would not be talking about him.

Imus makes stupid comments and still gets a decent job. Pacman is arrested 6 times and is involved in a shooting, then is still given big money.

I see no difference between the two.

I just hope PacMan gets in a game before he gets suspended again so the Titans can save a 4th round pick. Jones belongs in jail and will end up there unless he gets killed first.....just a matter of time. He lost his first house in Nashville due to foreclosure and now his last one is up for auction because they couldn't sell it either.

However, he is one hell of a football player....one of the most electrifying players you will ever see with the ball in his hands. Pretty much a shut down corner since no one ever throws toward him.....but he will average about one personal foul per game due to his lack of self control.

Imus is a total freaking idiot. He had the book thrown at him last time and continues with this. I know he tried to backpedal, but the comment couldn't be any more clearly racist. But, FWIW, racist comments are made on a daily basis by many radio personalities.

dont like him dont listen...I dont need the government to censor my media, I can do it myself.

I agree with that. I've never listened to him and I didnt even know who he was before the last time he was in the news. If my radio is on, it's on a music station.

Couldn't be more true!

Eh, I'd say racism or racial comments are two envelopes that should never be pushed. I really have no sympathy for an adult (especially an educated and intelligent one) who can't understand what is and what is not a racist comment and wether or not it is a good thing or a very bad thing.

Fact is that Imus has always been an out of the closet racist. When someones filled with that much hate, they can't ever be helped. He's like a timebomb ticking for the next oppportunity.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of the comedy central roasts. It's really an apples and oranges situation, with intent and understanding being the difference. I love those shows.

You're right, as long as the racial humor is done is good taste, it can be really funny. Take Howard Stern & Dave Chappelle for example.
