Try doing a search. There's tons of information about SMR's (swirl mark removers). Welcome to the site. JimS

:welcome to Autopia Fr0zen!

My best advice would be to go and download the Autopia Ebook! The first 9 chapters are free and should you find the info in there valuable (like most all of us do) then you could just buy the rest of it. The money goes to the community and you get a very spiffy book to refrence to whenever you like.

I'm sorry if this looks like I'm reluctant to answer your question, but your answer is VERY readily available in the EBook.

Good Luck

Fr0zen - Welcome to Autopia. The suggestions you've received in this thread and your other one are REALLY good advice, not just a blow-off. You'll better appreciate specific recommendations after you scope out the basics as they are presented under "learn", for instance. Just for a starter, you should be looking at/for:

Car wash solution and mitt/boar's hair brush

Two bucket method of washing

MF towels (plush and waffle-weave)

Drying technique

Polishes/SMR/paint cleaners

Waxes/Sealants/QD

Welcome to Autopia Fr0zen. The questions you ask are why most people are here. To go through everything and discuss all the products and techniques you'd need would be too huge a task and wouldn't be as informative as if you read up on it yourself.

The information IS out there, you just have to run a few searches and be patient as you read. We can definitely help you, but you have to at least try to meet us half way. :)

Hi,

As you can see there is definately a tendancy for people to lean toward the Socratic method of learning on this web site. Indeed the advice is excellent and I'd definately take advantage of the e-book. However, I realize a lot of people don't want to They seem to devote the time necessary teach yourself by researching this and other resources. Which I believe is excellent advice, but a lot of people don't want to start from scratch... they simply want to remove the scratches.

However, if your only interested in finding out how to improve the appearance of your car and provide some protection it is possible to do this without spending hours doing research.

The other issues that need to be addressed are budget , meaning dollars ( you can buy excellent waxes for 10 bucks or 175 bucks a can ) and how much time are you wiling to spend on preping , polishing and washing your car.

Assuming that you want to do a 'basic' car detailing I'd suggest that you go to the Meguiar's web site and fill out the forms defining your level of interest and they will provide you a 'prescription' for your specific car using , of course, their products.

Are these the best products? Not necessarily but they are readily available at most Autozone or Pep Boy type stores.

Personally I'd substitute Mother's sealer /glaze and their carnuba wax for the final two steps. These are available at most Wal Marts.

Now if you want to go beyond that I'd reccommend that you go to the 'Car Care Specalities ' web site. There is an excellent article on some of the best materials available today.

I will tell you this.. do not miss the clay bar step. ( You can find this also at most Wal Marts) This is probably the most important step and the single biggest improvement you will make.

Then try 3M Imperial Hand Glaze... if that doesn't polish out the swirls you'll need to use something more agressive such as Swirl Mark Remover. Then the sealer glaze then a couple coats of wax.

One last thing. I'd suggest that you invest in a pack of micro fiber towels for wipeing off the residue. They really make the process a lot easier.

I hope this helps answer your question

CHScholl - Well, I wouldn't really say it's a matter of "Socratic Method" (I'm an insufferable nitpicker when it comes to epistemology :o) but you DO have a point and you DID get my attention. Thanks for reminding me/us that although some questions get asked frequently, and are very general, that DOESN'T mean that posts to the U should just get a "go search" response. And I certainly don't want Fr0zen to feel blown off.

Fr0zen - OK, let's see if I can get you started off on the right foot. To give you decent advice, I need to know some things first. I'll check back on this thread starting tomorrow (Monday). I WILL say that if you've done some more research it'll make things easier for both of us, but if not, that's OK.

What's your shopping preference, brick and mortar or on-line? Warning! I'm MUCH better informed about products available on-line or from pro supply places.

Are you interested in buying a PC or other polisher? It would make scratch/swirl removal a lot easier, but it's not absolutely necessary. Are you on a strict budget, or is the sky the limit, or are you somewhere in between?

What year/make/color is the vehicle in question? Do you have a garage? Can the car be off the road for a few days in a row while you work on it?

Fill in those blanks and I'll give you my $0.02.

Well i made up my mind now i read all of the detailing tips i narrowed down my choice to Menzerna Intensive Polish Followed By Menzerna Finial polish and P21S

I have 2 cars one is always garage kept its a deep slate color almost black and the other is outside its Pure Black its an everydayer but has lots and lots of minor scratchs and swirls that the Menzerna will take off without dulling out the finish also 2 question can i use the finial polish after the car is all done without useing the intensive polish when it doesnt have any swirls and scratchs and get a great shine each time or do i need something like All-IN-ONE. Peeps told me the Menzerna finial polish is almost the same as Klasse ALL-IN-ONE.I have a chamberlin WaxMaster Buffer im thinking about the PorterCable im not a budget but dont want to spend more then $80 right now after spending $400 on a HID System

Here is what i got in my basket at autopia right now

Menzerna Intensive Polish

Menzerna Finial Polish

Autopia Ultimate Detail Towels

Autopia Handy Grip Applicator

P21S Advanced Payste Wax

Total=$75.75

Hi Fr0zen.

I'll start with Klasse AIO. Klasse AIO is an acrylic cleaner/protectant, it's not a pure polish, AIO would be a good base for P21S "AKA" S100. S100 is the same thing as P21S at a lower price, $15.00 VS $25.00

Skip the WaxMaster, if you don't buy a PC do it all by hand. If you're going to buy everything from Autopia, and if your going to polish by hand you should use EINSZETT polishes. Menzerna polishes work best when used with a machine.

I made my mind now im gonna buy Menzerna Intensive Polish followed by Menzerna Finial Polish followed by a coat off Klasse All-IN-ONE then a coat of P21S i will use them in those steps to im probley gonna get a PorterCable or a find a nice one to fit on my Bosch Hand Drill. I also got 2 applicator pads and 3pk of Ultimate Detail Towels.

I will Take some Before and After Pics and Post Them For sure.

Where is a good place to buy Polishing wheels and adapters and stuff like that and what kind do i need ?? thats the part im stuck on now thanks all

Sounds like you have the detailing bug;)

These sites offer all the pads and backing plates for the PC.

www.properautocare.com

www.topoftheline.com

www.meguiars.com

You will need a backing plate, i like the 6 inch back up plate and the 6-1/2 pads. A good start up kit would have.

1 wool pad compounding pad. Use this pad if the foam compounding pad doesn't cut enough.

2 or More foam compounding pads. You can use this pad with the Menzerna Intensive, you will use this pad more than all the outhers.

1 or more faom polishing pads, for the Menzerna Finial Polish and or AIO.

Proper-autocare has a PC pad kit for $60.00 but i would skip it and just buy what you need.

If you're going to use Klasse AIO, why not use Klasse sealant glaze? It adds alot more protection and gloss.

BTW Don't use a drill with a pad on it to polish your paint they spin to fast, if you do use it you may burn the paint or rub through it. The PC is a Porter-Cable DA polishing machine.

I can't wait to see the pics. :wavey

Fr0zen - Heh heh, sounds like you've figured things out pretty well without much help! As Andre' said, skip the drill attachment for your drill, that's really a "mini-rotary" for serious, small, localized repairs. Spring for the PC, you'll be glad you did. The RANDOM ORBITAL nature of it will have numerous advantages over the rotary nature of a drill, especially as you're starting out.

I'm a big KSG fan, but you can do the S100/P21S (get S100 and apply the $ towards a PC and pads) over AIO just fine (again, use the SG $ towards the PC and pads). Yes, you can use the Menzerna Final before the AIO to add some gloss when you don't have any real swirls/scratches to deal with. Your plan looks good.

For the PC related parts, what you need will depend on what comes with the PC you buy. Andre's tips on what you'll need are good. Only buy what you need as opposed to "kits". Again, I STRONGLY advise you to skip the stuff that works of a drill unless you have a particular deep scratch you want to work on (and I'd still just use the PC). Check out the links Andre' provided, especially the CMA and TOL ones.

Get some good car wash soap and a chenille mitt for washing so you don't reintroduce any swirls.

:wavey he-he-he .... Glad to see I was missed. You all handled this just maaaahhhhh-vuh-lously! :up Accumulator, thanks for letting folks know my whereabouts;otherwise, the Autopia St Bernards might've been trackin' me. :D

Yes im amazed at by the Menzerna Products and the glow that the PS12 Gives off i heard that S100 is not as durable as P21S

Fr0zen- I thought the S10 and P21S were the same :nixweiss . Neither one of them is gonna give you GREAT durability, but they will give you a nice look!
