So i need your help!!! Im restoring a 1962 Impala and im at the stage of polishing, i used ppg bc/cc black, the paint is very soft, softer then honda/porsche paint and yes its mix right. i went straight from M105 wool/surbuf to black 85rd and it came out really good, not quite perfect but getting there. any how, i keep getting this faith scratches in the paint, if i use orange pad, swirls up the finish, so i only using white lc, black, crimson, ultrafina and everything i tried i keep getting these scratches they kinda look like pig tales, im using a rotary around 1500rpm coming down to 900. i thought it was something in the pad but it happens with all off them, changed towels, and i still keep getting these scratches. i need help, any ideas, maybe i need to finish with a da????????? :frusty:.

any help would be much appreciated

Thank you

If you're getting pig tails, or something similar, it sounds like there is something in your pad. I would use a brand new pad first, then go from there. If you can take some pics.

That's odd:think:

PPG clearcoat, when cured, is usually quite hard.

Any reason why you're using such an aggresive compound on an ultra soft clearcoat??Perhaps you can step down to Megs 85 Diamond Cut or any less agggresive ones. It'll still remove your sanding marks. On such a soft clearcoat, I would use 3M's double-sided pad that's 2ply vs Meg's 4ply wool.

After wool+rotary, I wouldn't go straight to 85RD+black pad on such a soft clear.

85RD is more of a finishing/jewelling polish.

It cannot remove all your wool-induced swirls.

85RD is also more suited to medium-hard clears.

If you hv to use wool at all, you can follow it up with:

1. Rotary+Yellow Pad+Megs 85 Diamond Cut to slowly remove lots of your wool swirls. Speed <1.5

2. DA + Yellow+Menz 106FF to refine the finish further.

3. PC + Finishing Pad + Menz FPII to finish it up.

On such a soft clear, I always wanna finish it with a PC. Oh well...that's just my style:hand:

I had to use M105 to cut through the pigtails from sanding and get all the sanding marks out, i actually tried using the surbuff pads and they worked whole lot better, i went from that to 85rd and it left a swirl free finish but i keep gettin these random scratches from somewhere i dont know whats causing them, i think im gonna try the da and see how that goes
