Yeah that's for sure -- especially with a rotary. I'd be afraid that I'd burn the paint all the way through!
 
Aside from a complete repaint and total restoration, I think that qualifies as the most dramatic before and after ever! Nothing short of a miracle!:bow :bow

The ss Volvo we used to have had some areas that were like that, but as long as I kept it well protected it was fine. A little neglect and it was dull, chalky, and looked like it needed a repaint, which it really did.



Older single stages seem to do this the most. Once the paint "dries out"/oxidizes to a certain extent it's pretty much permanently damaged. But "damaged" doesn't necessarily mean "finished" as long as you keep it treated/protected/etc. and limit the sun exposure; it'll still hold up fairly well. This goes back to the old "feed the paint" stuff that is now (rightly) considered BS but really *was* legitimate back in the days of older ss paint technology.

So do you think the job would have been easier if they started with a glaze like #7 or #3 to get it to be a bit more lubricated before they started on it with the oxidation remover?
