I'm considering purchasing a Honda Accord EX V6...

...and I know there are more than a few Honda fans on here! The one(s) I'm considering are a '99-'01 EX V6 Sedan. The color doesn't really matter to me, but I am partial to black/dark green.

My question is this: Are there any gotchas with the V6 version of the Accord, such as hidden expensive maintenance like timing belts? I've read a few reviews where some people favored the 4 cyl. over the V6, but I don't drive far enough (9 miles round trip to work) to need the higher gas mileage the 4cyl offers. Also, what's the best Accord forum out there?

Thanks!

Dont get it...The tranny on those V6 are the worse. My cousin went thru 3 tranny in pass 3 years. Yup, you can read all the tranny problem on few of those fine Honda forum. This also same as TL too. But if you get a 2003+ model then those are good, I havent heard any major problem yet.

Yup, the transmissions on those 98-01's are problematic. My sister just got the transmission in her 02 EX V6 replaced under Honda Care as the 02's aren't covered in the recall. But, I have many friends with 01's and 00's that have had no problems.

As far as I know, the V6 needs no more maintenance than the I4 does, both use timing belts, so they'll need to be changed. I'm not sure if the I4 has the 100K spark plugs though.

The 01's have some extra features over the 98-00's like power passenger's seat and 6-disc changer. They added side airbags in 2000 if that's one of the things you're looking for.

Check out V6performance.net. It's a little mod-oriented, but has some good info on V6 Accords.

Thanks for the feedback.....is that transmission in the '98-'01's the same as the Honda Odyssey trans? I've heard some horror stories of $2400 rebuilds on those. I'll have to look into extended warranties, I suppose, since I most likely will be buying one that's past the manufacturer's warranty.

Go with the 4 cylinder. If you can find an EX 4 cylinder you're golden. Those V6's have delphi starters. The denso's on the 4 cylinders are great.

^ That's exactly what I did, I was looking at the Accord, 4 and 6. 4 cycl got pretty loud under load. V6 was quiet and smooth, uses more gas, of course. I too haven't heard any issues with the new generation. Felt I got a lot more car with with max at about the same price and the VQ engine is great. Best of luck on whatever you decide.

TORRANCE, Calif., June 29, 2004 -- American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced that it will expand its existing voluntary recall of light truck models for a potential transmission defect to include certain Honda and Acura passenger cars. The voluntary action involves approximately 499,000 Honda and Acura passenger vehicles with V6 engines and 5-speed automatic transmissions. Affected models include certain 2003 and early 2004 model Accord V6 sedans and coupes, 2000-2003 and early 2004 Acura TL sedans, and 2001-2003 Acura CL coupes.

Mine was part of this transmission recall. What ticks me off is how they handled it. If the car had less than 15,000 miles they didn't inspect the gears or bring the tranny down. They just added an oil-jet kit. Over 15,000 and the brought down the tranny and replaced it if there was any abnormal wear or damage. I just can't help but thinking that as soon as my warranty is up I'm going to start having problems

If you do want that body style I'd go with the 4 banger or get the v6 6speed.

I'm thinking about selling and buying a slightly used Infiniti i30.

But see...I just have this problem with cars over 20k and torsion beams. I know the new ones don't have them, but the old ones always felt a bit sloppy to me.
