I'm buying an Apple Mac Mini!!!

SilverLexus

Super Enthusiast
I have decided (and wife has already approved) to purchase an Apple Mac Mini. They come out on Saturday and my name is decently high on the waiting list. I may have mine in on Saturday and possibly worst case by next Wednesday.

Here's why I am doing this:

1. Cheaper than any decent PC config I could create and available soon.

2. Mac:Office is 100% compatible with my existing IBM files.

3. Better photo/video management for our family home computer.

4. Better music management

5. Helluva lot better user operating system.

6. Better video display designs with higher refresh rates and color accuracy for photo analysis, movies, etc.

7. I'm tired of all the spyware, viruses, malware, hundreds of dollars spent on utilities that should be part of the O/S, etc.

I'm getting the 1.4ghz PowerPC with 80GB, the $600 Mini (versus the 40GB $500 Mini).

I guess I have joined the Apple cult but one with great customer service and much friendlier computing. :)

Bit underpowered though aren't they? - If video/picture editing is all you want to do you could probaably put together an equivalent PC for like $200.

Though I agree, apple is certainly onto something with the Mac Mini...In terms of an equivalent PC in that size it is great value! I am thinking of getting one as well as a Media Center PC!

I was thinking of getting my parents one, I am tired of reloading windows, viruses, spyware, and other windows security probs. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the comments.

You can't really say they are underpowered. The 1.4ghz chip is really on the order of a 2-2.5ghz Intel chip based on my research. Also, I got the 512MB RAM option for another $75. They wanted $475 for 1GB but I was advised that price will drop and can be added in later on.

I do work with large Excel sheets so the extra ram is important. I'm testing the machine for 14 days with my prior ThinkPad created work product.

I've been learning the interface on a friend's G5 and I have to say I am quite impressed. If all goes well, I will give this one to my wife and save up for the bigger, more expensive performance macs.

This will mainly be a home computer for storing photos and music and web surfing so I think I have enough power. :)

for what you'll be using your computer for i think the mac mini is a good idea. now if you wanted gaming, ermmm..... :o but those things are nice looking. :)

so are you gonna ask the dealer not to prep it? ;) :D

Yea, I agree a 2-2.5ghz celeron is a good estimation. But that goes back to the fact that you can get an equivalent powered PC for way cheaper!

I also mentioned underpowered because all the apple users here at work choose Macs for video editing and 3d rendering etc, so to them only the best dual G5's will do, irrespective of price. Hence why a 1.4ghz G4 mac chip seems underpowered to me.

I think the real beauty of the mini mac though is its small form factor. Yes you can get similiar performing PC for way cheaper, but to get a simliiar performing PC in that form factor is about the same price. Also at that price, many a frustrated/curious PC users are willing to invest in a MAC to use the nice OS.

>> hahaha I reckon P21S would make it look schweet as! PICS!

I wouldn't even get the 512 from them. It looks like it uses standard PC2700 DDR RAM - http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

You can pick up a 1GB stick of Mushkin (decent stuff) for $175 at Newegg.

A 512 stick is like $65, and you'd have the 256 left over to sell if you wanted...

I personally can't justify a $600 toy.. I like my Linux PC too much to switch completely, so the Mac would just sit on the side most of the time. Might be perfect for mom in a year or two though.

The Mac mini may or may not be more expensive than a cheap PC...it's extremely difficult to compare Apples and Oranges (or PCs). Here is an interesting article on the subject: Article

Here are a some facts though:

1. The Apple OS X is outstanding. It's basically the most intuitive and most elegant GUI running over UNIX...the most powerful and stable OS ever created.

2. Apple computers look great and are very well built. Apples always push the leading edge of computer design. The Mac mini is just the latest incredible machine they have put out.

3. The Mac mini specs will be just fine for what you want to do, although more memory is ALWAYS better in OS X. I have a 1.2GHz G4 iBook that I upgraded to 768 MB of RAM. It's great for photo edited, MS Office, web, email, etc.

And one opinion:

1. Macs are the BMWs of computers. They may be more expensive than PCs, but they are just flat out better!!!!

Bakes,

I agree...that is why I can sacrifice some performance (I remain a bit unconvinced having played with some 3ghz Dells lately-it's all about RAM anyway IMHO).

I am not a gamer so I think as long as I can do cool PowerPoint and Word and Excel I will be happy and I get to play with the new iLife. And wait until Tiger is out! :)

I started mjy indoctrination tonight and watched the 2 hour Keynote from MacWorld a week ago. What a great presenter Steve Jobs is...and a truly innovative company Apple is. I bet those Shuffles are going to sell quickly...

As SpoiledMan said, Welcome. He showed me the light about 2 years ago (after hounding me for about 4 years!). I now have 2 Macs (iMac G4 1GHz and a Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz). My Powerbook has NEVER crashed (no blue screens of death) and is stable. It's easy as all get out. When you uninstall a program, you don't have to go to 5 different folders and remove hidden files to clean your system. Just drag ONE folder to the trash bin.

It took me a week or so to learn all the different short cuts, but it's very user-friendly. I haven't even hooked up my old PCs since I moved... only the Macs.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but when I was making the switch I did some research. A PC processor has something like 23 gates for each process. If it has to restart the process, it goes back to the first gate. An Apple process has like 7 gates and the same thing if it has to restart. But obvisously less gates is quicker.

You can go to Macworld or PCworld websites and look for comparisons on the processors. There were some interesting articles in the print mags about 5 months ago.

And about the games... There are more games for PC, but if it's a good game, it's also available for Mac most likely.

Congratulations SilverLexus. I'm sure you'll be very happy. Before you know it, you'll end up like me and my wife. We have 2 iBooks and a PowerBook, 2 iPods and an Airport Express. I would love to replace my DVD player and CD player with a Mac Mini. As it is now, we stream most of our music to the Airport Express which is hooked up to our stereo. I agree that RAM is the biggest piece of the puzzel. But if you really look at it, this system has more horsepower than my Powerbook which I do quite a bit of Flash editing, audio and some video on. Have a blast and let us know what you think of it once it comes in.

WELCOME to the hordes of Mac users who have always known we had a better/faster/friendlier machine!:welcome

Oh, and by the way, stick with Safari for your web browser, it is far superior to IE

Wow! Keep us posted on how you like it.

I bought my first Ipod last August and love it. Now I want a Powerbook!

I may have to get the Mini as well. It would be cool for running all my media.

I am typing this from me new iMac G5. I upgraded for the extra performance.

Apple is awesome!!! This operating system is fantastic. I'm still learning a lot however so it will be a while before I am good. :)

I saw the Mini today and it is excellent. So small and cool looking and not that much slower than this G5 believe it or not. For lots of PC users this will be the way to go since you can as Jobs says Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, Mouse.

Some initial thoughts...I have absolutely no trouble so far running any of my Microsoft Office 2003 files...in fact there are feature enhancements in most cases.
