If you skip gears with a manual tranny...

My car is also a close ratio 6 speed, and I skip gears all the time cause it has enough power down low to handle it. I think it just depends on the car, and how you drive. In my car, I will go 1-3-5-6, 1-2-4-6, 1-3-6, or whatever I feel like at that time, really. In my old truck, I couldn't even think about doing that. As long as you aren't lugging it too bad, things should go fine.

Clutchless shifting....heh heh, don't try that with your own car, at least not the first time ;)

If I am correct, I read Accumulator had a Mallett Vette..

Yep- It was a '99 coupe, pewter/black, 396, 6 sp manual, 3.73s, black HREs, and all the other fun stuff. Chuck Mallett is as good as they get when it comes to aftermarket tuners.

IIRC, Accumulator sold his 'Vette some time ago..

Yeah, I couldn't appreciate it on public streets (no ground clearance and driving it remotely responsibly was insufferably boring) and I never had time to track it, so I wasn't using it much. Traded it towards the S8.

Sean, I do it because often I accelerate to the speed limit in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If I'm already at the speed limit (40mph, 45, 55), what's the need for 4th? I might as well just go into 5th since I'm going to end up there anyway.

I've been doing this for years in various cars, to no apparent detriment. As long as you aren't grinding gears, or heavily lugging, or anything else that's a no-no under other circumstances, it's no big deal.

Heh, I even used to skip using the clutch quite a bit in my old BMW 318i after having a bout of tendonitis in my left achilles for several weeks. It was incredibly painful to actuate the clutch pedal just to move from a stop (sheesh, even walking was a chore!), so I learned to match revs and forego the clutch as often as possible. When the tendonitis cleared up I'd gotten so used to doing this that I often did it just for fun, especially coming down twisty mountain roads - I'd left foot brake and match revs with my right foot, shifting back and forth between 3rd & 4th gears all the while.

When I got rid of that car it had 189,000 miles on the clock, the clutch had been adjusted twice and the tranny was as smooth as ever.

I have a 6 speed in my Wrangler and I go from 4th to 6th just about everytime. The only time it is a problem with *any* transmission is if the rpm's are to low for the gear you are in. That will put stress on the motor and transmission. Newer vehicles these days have short gear spans if you will and once you get to 3rd or 4th you can go to that 5th or 6th gear w/ no problems. Once again, RPM's have to be right.

I have a Porsche 911 and alway go from 4th to 6th. No problem. I have checked with the Techs at Porsche as long a you are reving high enough no problem.
