If you polish through the cc, is the damage visible?

Detailed 3 red integras, milano red, all had clearcoats

I got curious and called acura, they said that all years from 94+ with milano red paint were cc'ed from the factory.

If you got that from a dealer, I wouldn't be suprised if it is incorrect. I know they didn't clearcoat the white paint on Integras, nor did they clearcoat white paint on Accords through at least 2002. If the red paint is non-metallic, there is a good chance it wasn't clearcoated.

Yeah, it would definitely be duller. The base coat has very little shine on its own.

so how come single stage paint shines like clearcoat?

also why would one not CC a car. isn't it a good thing to have a CC??

Single stage paint is not the same as the color base coat in a 2 stage paint job. The base (color) coat underneath the clear coat does not have a high gloss. Not sure exactly why though.

I think clear coats always be used on factory paint jobs, including on non-metallic colors. Lexus does not clear coat black paint because they thing single stage black looks deeper and better. It also means you need to stay on top of the paint regularly so it doesn't oxidize.

The base coat isn't the same thing as a single-stage paint job. In a single-stage, the suface is made to stand on its own and shine all by itself. With a 2 stage system (clear-coated) the actual base coat is dull underneath the CC.

Clear coating has its own pros/cons just like a single-stage. I'm sure there are many people on the board that would take one over the other for various reasons.

Seems like I read somewhere that the Type R's where single stage as well. I'll bet your painter just used a clear on the part he painted.

Steve, when I looked at the hood of your car, I said that I thought it was repainted. You can see the overspray on the passenger side on the black piece between the windshield and hood. I don't know if it is worth it or not but maybe after you get the paint to a level your happy with, maybe you can get the rest cc'ed

What approach would you take to polish a single stage paint job? Would you use the pc/ or by hand different, or use different products to take out swirls?

I normally take the same approach to single stage and base coat/clear coat paint jobs, but normally you need an extra (usually slightly more aggressive) polishing step when prepping the paint.

Yeah Eric, that's why I think the hood was cc'ed because of your observation. Maybe the next time we meet up you can take a look at the whole car and see what you think is up with my paint.

Sorry for the late reply on here...

On my Milano Red paint job (1996 Integra), I experienced NO paint transfer whatsoever other than the rear bumper (repaint).

Milano Red is a 3-stage red finish. Base coat - Yellow...2nd Color Coat - Red...3rd stage is clear. I also found this out when I burned the paint slightly in one spot. You saw the yellow peeking through. Since then, it has been repainted (whole car).

There has to be a repaint on most of the car. I doubt on different years Acura changed whether they used clearcoat on their Milano Red paintjobs. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem pratical.

For what it's worth, the guy who owned the teg before me was a 40 year old insurance adjuster so you KNOW everything is by the book. You have to see the amount of paperwork on the car this guy gave me... JEEZ.
