If Lake Country Pads are Fail--what are you guys now using?

... I think I'll try a different brand in the future just to keep an open mind.

I'd like to hear your take on comparing the tangerine HydroTechs with the orange Griot's polishing pads. I like the Griot's, just used some on my wife's A8.

Has anyone given any thought as to how many companies "sell" foam pads and how many actual manufacturers there are that "produce" foam pads? Do the math.

It's likely that 5 places sell foam pads designed, cut and built from the same place.

By the way, I have had no issues with LC pads, Hydro or otherwise. We have had some backings come off but LC takes care of that issue without question.

Anthony

Anthony, glad to see you again.

Although insider, trade secret info is a :nono for us consumers to know, I'm betting LC can easily be responsible for half, maybe more, of the foam pads on the market. I do wonder if Surbuff is its own manufacturer and who's behind the the Meg's DA pads. Just wanting some nosey info.

Of course Anthony. There are not that many. LC, Buff and Shine, American buffing, Schlegel, 3M/Edge

Not sure if schlegel and 3M pads are made by Lake country

My other problem with LC pads is all of their foams are european foam and there are differences between them and some other euro foams but american foam still is my favourite

euro closed cell foams from buff and shine are just too grippy and heat up the paint too much when used.

The detailersdomain pads are the hands down best in terms of cleaning and the way they are cut. Never any issues with pad wobble and the backing foam will not tear apart even after heavy abuse, trust me I have tried and those things are built solid.

LC does make some great foams, especially the hydro pads but the are difficult to clean and the velcro backing still separates after heavy use.

I agree here...hydros are pretty darn good, but cleaning them is a chore! They hold onto water too much. The velcro separates after about 10 uses on them, but the foam holds up pretty well!

I use the detailedimage ones, but love the detailersdomain green pad!!!!

I've been using the Hydro Tech 5.5" pads on my Griot's DA for the last couple months. The Cyan combined with 205 is my one step and finishes LSP ready imo. However, once the pads are used for a few panels, or maybe half a car, they are useless. They separate from the backing plate, wobble a lot due to a poor cut, get soft and soaked quickly, basically they are only good brand new and clean, and only for a short amount of time. Rubbing a microfiber towel on it to clean it inbetween panels only hastens the foam failure, it actually does damage it.

I'd be absolutely thrilled if anyone has a better alternative, as I am ordering 6 pads every week for the last two months as they have such a short life span. I used CCS in the past but the HT Cyan just finishes down too well to go back to the CCS.

I just placed an order for a few 3M pads. I look forward to seeing how they respond in comparison to my LC CCS pads. Both are 3 - 4". I have had issues with LC lately falling apart too easily and grabbing more than normal. That said, I am not ruling out user error. I understand I have plenty to learn and this could be an artifact of my technique.
