I use to bash on optimum but...

Curious to see what other people say here

I've used it on the rotary 3-4 times now, but have always finished with my Cyclo and OP or some other mild/finishing polish.

OP looked very good each time, but I ran the Cyclo to be certain since I don't know enough about OP.

yea, im wondering to see what other people say.. is op consider a medium or light/finishing polish?

The product itself is fairly mild. I bought it as a finishing polish.

For example, I do know that it is much milder than Meguiar's DACP M83.

As a test, I used the same style W8000 yellow foam on a rotary and M83 did much more correction that OP on the same two paint finishes.

Optimum says to use OP with a cutting foam or wool to get more aggressive results. I've used it with a heavy polishing pad and it did have more bite in that case, but that's all I've done with it in that regard.

OP is a relatively versatile polish. It's correction ability is largely depend on the pad aggressiveness. It's fine for finishing on most paint surfaces.

I know why you ask, as i have seen hologramming disapear almost as soon as the pad hit the paint with op, i have yet to see them return on anything i have worked on.

I use it with a rotary and a polishing pad. Except for very soft paint, I do not notice any holograms. I remove the residue with OCW. Saves me a ton of time not having to follow the rotary work with an orbital.

I've talked to David of Optimum and he says that with proper technique, OP will finish down hologram free with a polishing or finishing pad.

This gives me a glimmer of hope that I may have been doing something right with the product after all! :D

:2thumbs: thats what i really wanted to hear! i mix mine with htec about 1/3. holograms is my main concern with maybe a little swirl removal.

my technique isnt all that great and i still get a kick *** finish! thats why i was worrying about its hiding abilities, if any.

Mothers Powerpolish is another polsih with a bit of bite that finishes down perfect.

And like Optimum polishes, is very pad dependant. #83-like correction with a yellow cutting pad, and #80 like finish with white polishing pad.

Today I tried OP on the front bumper of a previously repainted '04 Lexus ES. I used a Meguiar's W8000 around 1400 RPM on my rotary.

It seemed to grab on the finish. I tried using a bit less, then a bit more product, but it still grabbed and got too warm too fast. I was worried about paint blistering since it's not a metal panel. I switched to a different product and felt better about it.

This is my general concern/problem with OP.

Is it my pad? I've used it with more aggressive pads and found some hologramming.

the w8000 is the yellow polishing right? thats weird.. doesnt grab for me at all. i usually go very slow 1000rpms- for bumpers.. and i like using the purple lc wool pads because it doesnt heat up at much. are you sure that the paint was fully cured on the bumper? does it still feel somewhat rubbery?

PRB, there is something fishy, because one of the biggest advantages of Optimum is to run cooler and physically easier than other products. I used #80 (which is a pretty well lubricated product) with a dying rotary and the machine run uneven and was extremely hot. Then I decided this is not the day of the Megs, so I switched to OP on the same pad, and wonder of wonders, the machine was running evenly and was barely warm. And as a plus, I got wonderful results.
