I think i broke my CD drive!!!

zesty-man

how do ya like it?
groebuck, help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think i messed up my computer pretty bad this time. baiscally, i was burning lots of music for my dad. after going through about 15 CDs, it suddenly stopped burning at 94% complete. something was wrong, becuase there was an orange light on. so anyways, i proceeded by going with the control+alt+delete. it said that the program wasnt responding, so i closed it. i tried to press the button to open the cd drive, but it was jammed. i tried pressing eject, but it didnt work. so finally, i put a paper clip into that tiny hole in the cd drive. the CD thing popped out, and the blank CD was spinning like crazy. now, it just seems that the CD drive is dead. it has that stupid orange light on. any suggestions?

well i have some great news. i shut down my computer, and turned it back on, and the CD drive was working again!!!

the moral: be careful how you put your CDs into your CD drive

how much RAM have you got? Probably the computer ran out of resource ..it's better to burn say 7 or 8 discs n do a start up , oh well that's just me :)

Zesty it happens - even to me. A couple things to check, if you use Nero check and make sure your burn proof is on (go to the choose recorder menu and make sure it is checked - it should be). It's not so much you ram as you have enough, it could be your hard drive. Try defragging it - I always do before buring a lot of CD's. The buffer on the CD rom is what writes to the cd and if it is not getting enough information then the burn proof is "supposed" to let the cache catch up and burn again. Sometime if the hard drive is fragmented enough the buffer cannot catch up and you get a coaster.

Also - depending on the speed of the burner - try burning the cd at less than the rated speed (so if it is 52x try 48 or 32x try 24).

ah, thanks for the help. after i finished burning all my CDs, i defragged my comp. it looked like it had a lot of fragment stuff (lots of red lines).

also, i do have nero. ill check about that burn proof thing
