I must be doing something wrong!!!

It has to be me. I must be doing something wrong. About 2 weeks ago I detailed a Corvette, and it came out pretty good. Its on its 3rd or 4th paint job, so there were alot of imperfections in the paint itself, but I got the clear coat nearly swirl free. I know this because I pulled it out into direct sunlight and checked my work over. It looked 90% good considering the condition of the paint.

Car is driven for a week.... through rain, on the highway,... somehow gets oil all over it.

I went out and purchased those Proline Grout Sponges for Lowes. I am using the 2 bucket method of washing. Somehow.... all the swirls are back, and they are back bad. The car looks good out of the sun.. but in direct sunlight there are swirls everywhere.... ***!!!

It must be me, no luck with the megs wool wash mits, and even less luck with the grout sponges. I need help. Its all well and good that I do great correction work, but if I can only get a week out of it because i don't know how to properly wash a car than what good is it!

i've used the Lowes GS for quite some time and have had no problems. it might be your wash technique or the swirls are re-appearing if you actually didn't remove them completely but more or less filled them. you may want to re-evaluate your wash technique...

Do you have grit guards in the buckets?

No unfortunately, but i have been considering purchasing them for quite some time. I never let the sponge or mit hit the bottom of the the bucket though.

Did you use a glaze after polishing?

Yes, I used RMG.

A little more info:

3rd or 4th paint job,... BC CC

The car is black

I used:

Dawn Wash

Clay Magic Clay Bar

Megs GC Wash

Danase Swirl Abolisher III

4Star SMR

RMG

Collinite 845

Megs Final Finish

I wash with,

2 buckets

Proline Sponge

Megs GC Soap

Dry with Pakshaw Waffle Weave Microfiber towels (that i blot with)

Doesn't RMG fill? Theres been a lot of talk about Glazes lately and their filling properties. Maybe this isn't one of them but it might be and if it is...thats your problem. Did you inspect in the sun after RMG?

Yea I figured that was coming next.

As far as I can remember RMG does fill. I checked the car in the sun after my LSP,... and it was 90% perfect. I can't understand though even if the filler is filling (which is what I thought I wanted it to do); how/why would it dissipate after just two weeks, and one wash!?!

That's probably the problem then. You should definitely but a set of 2 grit guards for your buckets and rub the sponge against the grit guard to remove the dirt off of it so it doesn't scratch the paint.

a few good rain stroms or washes and most glazes are done

also check in sun after polishing

and a IPA wipedown to make sure you are removing the swirls

as most polishes have oils that will hide swirls if not broken down correctly

If he washed the vehicle once and the swirls were back he would have had to do more than just get some stuff from dirty water on his mitt. Its a vette(hard clear coat) its on its 3rd or 4th paint job so that has to be some ignorantly hard clear on that car. I don't think one wash with out a gritt gaurd could have done that unless he had sand paper to the bottom of the mitt.. I believe it was the RMG hiding the swirls.

what?

yes stock vette paint is hard but this car has been repainted several times

IMO repaints are soft

why would 3-4 repaints make it hard?:nixweiss

This is very annoying....

Fortunately, the swirls are very light, so a little more SMR on a light polishing pad should do the trick... but what a job it was the first time. Looks like its going to have to wait till I get my nerve up again.

What is the purpose of the Glaze if it only hides swirls once?

I was thinking that with multiple repaints and more shots of clear, it would be harder. I don't know why I thought that more clear coat would equal harder clear. Its been a long day, LOL sorry.

Heres one for ya. I have been away for a while and my Impala SS was in storage, which consists of the car being put at the bottom of my hill in the second driveway. I don't have a car cover because nothing seems to fit this boat. This year I will have one custom made.

Car was Zaino'd last June before GM Nats. Washed about 10-12 times over the summer, and then not washed from September 07 to today.

You do the math on what it may have looked like.

Washed with Zaino and grout sponge,

Dried with Z6, and Detailing

Car some light swirls up close but nothing serious... and its was covered in grime!

3 feet away it looks freshly detailed.

Now I am scratching my head?!?!

I think maybe I should have spent more time polishing the vette and less time glazing.

I have used RMG and WMF from CG as far as glazes go. I always precede them with a good polish job that eliminates any marks. The glaze just amps up the wetness, but is worth the step on black or metallics. It should not be used to try to hide sins, IMO.

Have you tried out DWG? You could top it with something more durable and the filling properties would be maintained under the LSP. Honestly I haven't tried a side by side against RMG so I don't know how it stacks up for filling.

Just a thought

If you NEVER want the swirls to come back remove them with 106ff followed up by Ultrafina, or you can keep using a glaze.

I've got to pickup more stuff coming up real soon. My pads are shot, and I am not all that thrilled with the 4Star LLC and SMR. I did try the Swirl Abolisher III though and I really liked that.

Whats the deal with the 106???
