I made the jump

I'll pass on the advice I was given when I started out with a rotary-

'The secret to sucess is to practice and then practice some more. Oh! by the way did I mention practice

Notes:

1.I would strongly advise the wearing of safety glasses when operating or using this or any other machine

2.Be extra careful and avoid sharp edges on your car because paint is thinner at these points and you may wear through to the base coat. If you are concerned, use 3M Safe Release Masking Tape over these areas. It's also a good idea to cover vinyl / plastic trim also.

3.Practice on an older car until you get the feel of it.

4.Prime the foam pad with clean distilled water or a QD spray as this helps the product to spread more easily.

5.After you are done compounding and you are satisfied with the surface finish you will need to apply some paint protection.

6.Using too much product will clog up the pad and cause bounce and possibly holograms. Too little, will break down too quickly thereby causing too much heat, also causing holograms.

This is the speed range of a PC 7428 HS Rotary

Note: The speed control is numbered from 1 to 6. According to Porter Cable here's the rpm range: (Speeds can vary 200 rpm depending on the line voltage [110 volts to 120 volts] in your area.

1 = 1,000 to 1,200 rpm, 2 = 1,400 to 1,600 rpm, 3 = 1,800 to 2,000 rpm, 4 = 2,200 to 2,400 rpm, 5 = 2,600 to 2,800 rpm, 6 = 3000 rpm

TOGWT: I plan on taping seams and 'skipping' a lot of areas (sharp creases etc) until I get some hands on time, as well as using mild pads and most likely staying with #2 Fine Cut and #9 2.0 Swirl Remover. Then using the PC for the final steps & areas I avoided with the rotary.

My main intent for the rotary was to make the job of cleaning up the heavy scratching and swirling on the cars that I detail for side cash easier. Invariably, it's the car with the "Swirl Plus Deluxe Package" that finds its way to me for detailing.

These take a LONG time with just the PC.

OK, my Chicago Electric rotary just arrived today...after about 3 weeks. :bounce

How can they sell a 7" rotary for $25.00 AND include a 7" velcro backing plate, a 7" flat backing plate, polishing bonnett and extra brushes for the motor? What an incredible deal.

I ordered my chicago rotary saturday the 19th. So hopefully I get it within two weeks. That seems to be the norm.

I also ordered LC 7.5" pads one yellow and one white and also a LC 6" velco backing plate.

I used to use a dewalt when I was detailing at a full serv car wash so I have some experience. Its just a matter of reminding myself.

My pads are in route, I can only hope I have good luck with harborfreight.

Keep on buffin'

Do you think this is an accurate comparison for the harborfreight rotary?

Man, I tempting too.

Hey White95Max, did you have a chance try out the rotary on your Maxima yet :D

I only meant that I had ordered one. I didn't receive the rotary yet.

And it won't touch the Maxima at all. I have no reason to use it on the Max because any swirls on the Max are minimal, and can be easily removed by PC.

I have my dad's green '94 Grand Voyager to practice on. He doesn't care about how it looks, so rotary holograms are no big deal. I will be ordering some SSR3 soon to use with the rotary.

Oh ok I see. I'm ordering it too. I hope I dont need to wait for 2 weeks before to recieved package . Those Horrible Frieght(Harbor Frieghts) is very tardy when come to ship out the packages.

Mine was shipped yesterday so hopefully in 14 days i'll get it. My backing plate and LC pads should be here tomorrow! I can't wait!!!!
