Take a look at what I got to work on yesterday. It's not perfect, but thats all they will get for $160.

And here is todays project. Yes, that is mold.

Wow....just wow....I have to say that makes the top of the list for one of the worse interiors I have ever seen. It would be a stretch to do a full interior on that bad of a vehicle, plus what ever exterior you do for $160.

Retail work can be the same way...only difference is that you can actually charge accordingly for retail. ;)

I have never had a retail job quite this bad, but they have come pretty close. My retail price for this job would have been closer to $300 but it would have come out better too. The really unbelieveable thing is that both of these cars came from the same dealer and he had them on his lot for a long time before deciding to have them detailed...he was trying to sell them like that!

I just threw up in my mouth.

I did dealer work when just starting out but each car was worse than the last and it just wasn't worth what little I was being pad.

That's probably the worst part of the whole story! How could you ever sell cars in that condition and live with yourself? Here's the keys to your slightly used Mold-mobile, tell your friends. Sheesh.

Call me fussy or a wus or whatever but I won't work on anything remotely like that. I sent a lady in a minivan away just this week and it wasn't half as bad as that.

O.K., I gotta ask! How DO you clean such filthy interiors? What products and processes/tools do you use? And how long did it take time-wise?

To me, those interiors looks like a poster-child for a steam-cleaning machine or super-cleaner. What's really disgusting is people actually sit and drive in cars like those and think nothing of it.

It was a dealer car so perfection was not the goal on the VW. I spent 4 hours vacuuming and a couple hours cleaning the dash, trim, vents, cup holders, etc. When they are nasty like this I spray the hard sufaces down with APC, let dwell for a couple minutes, agitate with a brush, wipe with a rag, and blow out cracks with compressed air. The removable fabric floor mats get a good vac, blown out with air, soaked with upholstery cleaner, scrubbed, pressure washed, and dryed. For seats and carpet I use a heated extractor and VX5000 steamer.

A note to anyone who ever deals with mold in a vehicle. I highly suggest spraying down the entire area that is mold infested with something like Spray Nine (I like Spray Nine because it kills all kinds of contaminents and virii, including Hep C and HIV). Let it dwell for 10min or so, then do whatever you normally do. Don't EVER just "go at it" when it comes to mold or other toxic substances. All it takes is inhaling a few spores and you could be facing some real health problems.

Don't forget - wear a mask!

Yes that as well. And even more so if you have employees, because you can be held liable if you don't ensure that your employees have access to and are utilizing adequate safety equipment.
