I got my first Stop Payment today...lesson learned.

Sorry to hear this! I would try to cash it first as well. If it doesn't go through, take 5 minutes to make a phone call and tell her you will get a lawyer and the police called to get your money. She may get scared and pay you. If not then do what you want from there. I do not let people walk over me and I understand where you are coming from with not wanting to make a big deal about it but the way I look at things is, people need to be taught a lesson and this lady is one of them. If you were local, I'd do it for you.

I would also ask the bank how manu stop payments she has had in the past year. Odds are this is a pattern and therefore evidence of fraud.

I seriously doubt the bank would release that information.

You'd be amazed how much information some tellers will reveal as long as it doesn't give you access to personal information or the account. I had someone write me a bad check once. Several trips to the bank to try to cash it provided a lot of information. One teller even told me what the pattern of deposits were. She told me that there was a direct deposit that posts on a certain day and I should try coming in first thing in the morning to try to cash the check before the person could withdraw the money.

Info duly noted.

Hmm, I never thought about it as a way to prevent people from continuing to get away with stuff like that. I'm all for punishing dirt bags, but this one is done and over with. Lesson learned and new lessons learned from this thread. Glad I posted it, hope others see this and react to it differently.
