I Did a Bad Thing...

A guy that used to be two levels up from me at the office just bought a `17 GTI. He says it`s more fun than the BMW M6 he had. B)

After you get a few miles on the clock, get a Stage 1 ECU tune. That really wakes the engine up and improves fuel economy a bit.

I like the seats haha, sorry 512 :D
Congrats on your new ride! I will be honest, I never liked GTIs very much.. And then I drove one, it blew me away. I will say that in my opinion it`s the most entertaining FWD car on the market (Sorry Focus ST)

Regarding the seats: before I got my MK7 R, I had a MK5 GTI with plaid cloth seats. If I could have ordered my R with cloth seats, I would have. Plaid is a Golf/GTI tradition.

Cloth is much easier to take care of than leather, and much more comfortable in very hot or very cold conditions. The Chevy Tahoe I drove before the GTI was custom-ordered with every option checked except a leather interior.

Love GTI`s. First new car I bought after college was a 99 GTI Vr6. GTI`s are always on the check-out list when I`m shopping for myself.

UNLESS you`re talking dog-hauling ;) Not flaming, I vastly prefer cloth seats but they`re high-maintenance in the Crown Vic dog-hauler.

For me I like Dark leather because i can have random spot of grease or oil on me and its easier to get that off of leather then trying to get it out of cloth after its been ground in by my ample backside. As for these darn Golf GTI`s and Golf R`s, they are killing me I love them I want to drive one for a year. So many cars I wish I could drive for few months or a year just to experience them. Miata, Mustang, Focus ST, Corvette, Challenger, Charger, M2, M3, M4, any Mercedes Coupe AMG or even Sedan AMG, 370Z, GTR, the list goes on and on so many great cars and thats not even the silly exotics or just plain expensive super cars. I lust more over a GTI then a McLaren as I will never have a McLaren but I can have a GTI i just have to pick it over the other 25 cars that I can afford and lust after.

trashmanssd- I hear ya, I sometimes get the hankering for a white GTI/R for a spare car that I simply wouldn`t Autopian-obsess over...if a meteorite lands on the `93 Audi....

Put a clean dog on a leather back seat and a cloth back seat and see which one fares better. ;) The leather will likely have scratches and punctures or localized stretching.

I would argue that if you put a dirty dog (or anything else for that matter) in a car without covering the seats up, you`re doing it wrong, regardless of whether it is a leather or cloth interior.

Luckily I have the beater S10 for dog hauling duty! I loved the leatherette in my Jetta, but cloth feels more comfortable for me. I do like how VW put heat in them standard.

Nizmo:
Congrats on the car!
Looking forward to a full report with photos when you get around to the full detail.

Since you`ve already owned a VW, you are probably aware of the (supposedly) high cost of maintenance-and-parts. I`m just wondering if that is true in your experience. But like my late father used to say (I`ve used this before), "If you want to run with the big dogs , you`ve got to pay like the big dogs."

I`ve had my MK7 R since March 2015, it was the first allocation car that my dealer received (though a few of the Lapiz Blue Launch Edition cars went there too).

The only issue I have had with the car was a problem with the radio sometimes forgetting which station was selected when I turned the car off. That was fixed by the dealer using a software update.

Honesty, if you have any mechanical ability and like to DIY, then you`re golden. I owned my MK5 Jetta for 4 years and 30k. Other than tires and a battery, nothing special needed fixed. Always used a VW 502 approved oi and oem filters. I hve bought a couple special tools, but that`s about it. German cars gotta be run, not abused, but run hard. There are alot of online vendors that sell oem parts for great prices. IMO VW`s need oem parts.

Oil changes are super-easy on the Gen 3 E888 TSI engine with the oil filter conveniently mounted on top. It helps to have a oil extractor unless you have ramps though.

That is all....

Congrats and nice hot hatch, the mk7 GTI/R are the best looking new model hatches out there in my opinion. I even considered the GTI before my ST, but I found the perfect ST before I found a perfect GTI. Now you just need to tint and lower it to really set it off!

Thanks! Our strict tint laws kind of limit what I can put on there, it would pretty much look like nothing is on there. Lowering is honestly not an option. The roads here are not put together well and even my Rhino Ramps are now useless since the lower valance hits it :o

True on both points I guess. I just can`t have a car without tint anymore, feels weird inside the cabin. As for lowering, if the roads are anything like Ohio`s than I can`t say I blame you, although I had a lowered car before up there and it did alright. Either way it won`t make or break the car, turbo hatches are still fun, except when it comes time to replace the front tires.

I have 3M Crystalline tint (70% visible light transmission) on my car and it has been very good at dealing with the Southern California sun while retaining a stock look that doesn`t get me hassled for violating our tint laws, which are actually quite strict. Even if your air conditioning can keep up with the summer heat without the tint, with the tint it won`t have to work nearly as hard, keeping the cabin both cool and quiet.
