What does every one think the best clay bar system is? I have the Meguires quick clay kit, but am thinking maybe it is not the best. I just purchased a 97 A4 that is black and needs some care so I just want to know what is best one you guys and gals have tried.

A lot of people like Mothers. Most people tell you to stay away from the Meguiars clay. Most of Meguiars products are top notch. For some reason the clay is not up to their standards.
 
Yes, Meguiars clay sucks!! It falls apart, and leaves streaks on the surface of the car, it is horrible. Dont judge all clay products by Meguiars, trust me there are some good ones out there. Mothers clay is very good, also Zaino clay bar is good. You can get the Mothers at most local auto parts stores, and the Zaino you can get from Sal Zaino through mail order. For what it's worth, I've tried both Mothers and Zaino clay and they are essentially identical. And both worked great. Zaino is a better deal as far as price goes as you get two bars for the price of the Mothers kit. You do have to provide your own lubricant with the Zaino, but just get their car shampoo and mix 1/2 cap to 12oz water.
 
I’ve used Mother’s and 3M. Both did a very good. I’ll give the nod to the 3M just because I liked the way it felt using it. 3M felt like it molded a tad better and the Mother’s was a bit rubbery. I don’t think the 3M necessarily did a better job but on a tactile/feedback level I liked the 3M better.
 
According to Sal's site, Zaino clay costs $16.95 not including shipping. Kragen has Mother's clay kit (with wax and lube) on sale for $16.99. (I think MSRP is $19.95 with wax and lube)

I bought an 8 oz© bar from TOL for 17©95© It was very tacky© I'm not sure who makes their product© Can't say how it ranks to others© I used both a QD and a car wash solution for lube© Both worked well© I would go with the CW as a lube if economy is a concern©
 
I used Pinnacle Poly Clay....its expensive but works well. But then again, I have nothing to compare it to. I used the Pinnacle "very" expensive lubricant as well. Probably won't do that again!

I can not say which clay is the best, but I can say which ones the worst.



MEGUIARS clay is the worst!!!!!! Mr. Barry Meguiar if you are reading this, please come out with another clay bar that performs better than your current one.
 
Bigdog20- I am very familiar with meguiar's products. However to answer your question about clay, try pinnacle poly clay. Unlike regular caly, poly clay is a synthetic material. Poly clay last a lot longer and doesn't degrade as fast. I suggest using the lubricant because some water sources have mineral deposits that can break poly clay and other types of clay down very quickly. ~WF
 
Well after shooping around locally, I found the mothers kit. I couldn't locat the 3M or the other so I got the mothers. Now let me say this, the mothers clay texture and the meguires textur is like night and day. The mothers is kinda soft, while the meguires is like a brick. I am gonna take the Meguires back tonight just based upon the feel of the darn thing. I will, however keep an eye out for the 3M clay, and if I have success with the mothers, may try the ploy clay or z-clay.
 
Zaino clay and Mothers clay kit are about the same price BUT with Zaino you get two bars (and nothing else). With the Mothers kit you get one bar, a bottle of QD, and a small bottle of carnuba wax. You can mix your own lubricant for a few cents, and I have no use for the wax. That's why I think Zaino is a better deal.
 
I have used the Zaino clay and am happy with it. One advantage is that you use the Zaino car shampoo as the lube, so you are sort of "soap scrubbing" the car as you clay it. Then, all you do is wash the car, using the same Zaino shampoo.
 
Well I spent the better part of yesterday doing most of the exterior of my A4. Started claying at 11 and clayed till 2. I used mothers clay kit which was the clay bar and their showtime QD. I will say it is very esay to use, and the finish when your done is smooth with no bumps, very nice. I have alot of little lite scratches all over the car, like the owner took it through automatic carwashes, or just wasnt carefull. So after the clay, I washed with dawn again and dried. Now I would have really liked to polish out some of the scratches, but just had IHG and blitz. So i just put the IHG on and buffed off and this took care of most of them, but still are some there. After the IHG the paint looked good and pretty slick, but after a coat of blitz the paint looked wet and deep. Now I can still see tiny scratches/ swirls after that with a close look, but all in all I would say it looks good.
 
This is excellent advice! I was looking to purchase a clay bar for a car that I have to do next week. At the shop where I get my supplies they had the Mothers clay and the Meguiars clay right next to each other. I was going to buy the Meguiars strictly based on their reputation but now I don't think I will. I guess it is possible for even the best company to make a mistake in producing something I guess. I'm glad I read this. I may have based my whole paradigm of clay bars on a lousy example of them.

New member here. I detail for a body shop and do a whole bunch of overspray removal for insurance companies and contractors who have gotten overspray on vehicles. I have tried every brand of clay bar and by far the best one that I have used is from PRO Car Care Products. I found out about this brand of bar while I was talking to a detailer that has an actual "overspray removal company". They were painting a big tower at a power plant and he had the contract to remove the overspray that got onto nearly 200 cars. He set up a canopy in the parking lot of the power plant and did all these cars for about a month. He tried all the clay bars also and and even showed me how well the PRO bar brand worked compared to the others. I don't know why theirs works soo well, but there is really no comparison. The bars are pink and they have 2 grades of it, but even the heavier grade is very gentle. After using the PRO brand of bar, I don't even bother with the others. The other day I used a Clay Magic bar cuz I was out of the PRO bar, and it took twice the effort and time to do the same job.
