My L5-S1 is killing me!
Had a chance to do my favorite customers car today [:D]. Rich's car is kept in very good shape but had terrible scratches and swirls from automatic brushed car washes :nono . I decided to go 100% old school on it with my Makita. I usually finish up with a DA for fear of holograms but today I conquored my fear. I was really happy with how it came out, trust me when I say it was 98% swirl free, and when I started it was quite bad. I did the inside first then tackled the paint:

1500rpm/polish pad/PG
1500 rpm/polish pad/IP
1200rpm/finish pad/FPII
original EX by hand

Single Stage black looks good when it's done right :naughty No holograms :jump
 
Extractor worked good, used the Rug Renew in a spray bottle 20:1, the carpets were in pretty good shape though...

The interior only took 1.5 hrs, the outside took 6.5 hrs....yeah, I'm slow :nono :)

With Menzerna and the rotary the results still amaze me. I'm glad it all worked out on the rotary for ya.

Awesome. The finish is total mirror! Interior is very nice.

Great job! You should be very proud.

I wish I could step up to the rotary. Maybe one day I can sit at the big people's table for dinner.
 
Best lesson of the day I learned was to rinse out the pad after every couple panels, it keeps the pad from hopping due to product/dead paint build-up. Especially with the PG, that stuff is like glue, it's very effective though.
I have done a couple dozen cars with the rotary and I'm still learning. It's definately a skill to be slowly learned over time.
 
Yes!

I wash out my pads very often. Even using a brush to "scrape" the polish out of the pores doesnt always cut it. If its clogged through and through it needs washing. I can't stress do do this enough. You will notice a great difference.

Yes Sean you are on the right track. With the PG, I washed the pad out after every 2 panels. It was more work but it was worth it because the pad does not skip/hop nearly as much when it is clean.

One quick question...how did you clean your pads? did you use soap and water or just a stiff brush?

I just sprayed them out with the hose, it gets 95% of the gunk out. When I'm DONE, I brush in APC+ and then rinse them.
 
thats 2 stage paint...anything with a clear coat is considered 2 stage. Mono coat...which is what old muscle cars and old cars in general had is single stage with no clear coat they used different paint then they do today. and 3 stage is your pearls and metal flakes. Base coat, pearl/metal flake/clear
 
No actually it's single stage (no clear coat from the factory), my 98 Acura integra is single stage too (Milano red).
 
You've discovered my little trick for holigram free rotory buffing. I use mostly polishing/finishing pads no matter what product I use. I rarely will use a light cutting pad anymore.
