The previous-gen Sonata had a pretty bad power/gas mileage tradeoff...that 2.7l V6 had mediocre power AND mediocre gas mileage, I couldn't really understand why it was good at neither since it seemed to be a modern 4-valve engine. The V6 in the current Sonata is a world of difference having tons more power plus better mileage. Possibly not as good as a Honda, but certainly comparable to many other sedans.
As far as the insurance/parts costs, I know this was true in the past, but not sure how the domestic manufacture of the current Sonata has changed that (or not). In 2006 (first year of the current model) the 4 cyls were being assembled in Korea, and the V6 here. Not sure if that is still the case, or if they are all made here now.
