We`ve had rains and some winds here in North GA. Without power again for the 3rd time today. No internet and cable for the last 5 hours but that`s to be expected. Also a few downed trees in the area and one big one in the neighbours back yard dropped.
On another note - Candles are not needed when you have scangrip sunmatch light. Lol

Lost power at 7:30 Sunday night, and the fun was just starting! Lots of wind and rain (over 10 inches dumped from my gauge between Saturday and Monday morning). The pond on the other side of my back fence is now draining down my side yard into the street. But no damage to the roof or house. The next door neighbor ran us a power line from his generator, so we can power the fridge, plus a fan or recharge devices.
My son near downtown Orlando never lost power (he may be on the grid with the Executive Airport). About half my co-workers reported no power this morning, but some have gotten juice since.

Crazy afternoon and evening yesterday. I live just southwest of Atlanta. Plenty of wind and rain but fortunately power and internet stayed on. I was surprised we didn`t lose power. We lost power for 6 days during the last ice storm that blanketed Atlanta.

Out of power here at the office as noted in the other thread. At my house we only lost power for a few hours Sunday Morning and afterwards just had it flicker on/off here and there. Somehow got DirecTV signal throughout to watch some Football except in 5 minute patches where it would go out. Glad to see everyone on her made it out without any serious damage :bigups

Somehow every neighborhood around us has power except for our street. May be time to go take a trip and find a hotel for a bit until power is restored, kind of hard to sleep when it`s currently 85 degrees inside the house.

We finally got power back on again around 4pm. Threw most of the food in the fridge away just to be safe.

Seemed to be in weird pockets in metro Atlanta. My friends in Canton and Marietta had no power loss at all and the winds didn`t seem to be too high for them. We lost power in Dunwoody for about 24 hours .

For lighting, meaning specialized lighting where you want a light for EDC, in ur bg, etc - I`m in total agreement....
For SHTF situations like Harvey, Irene, etc - I do think that a AA/AAA capable led lantern is more suitable as finding those sorts of power sources is still going to be alot easier and convenient ......for most people. General public being the keyword...

I would have to agree on AA but now with solar chargers and USB connections Lithium is all I use. I can via solar in about 4 hours with a 26650 cell or about 1-1.5 hours via USB plugged into the car charging off battery alone. 18650`s are just insanely powerful and run times are crazy, they do last as well if you get good companies like Panasonic, LG or Sony. We`ve been using LIPO for many emergencies over the years and never had an issue including when sandy hit.
Yes, you can leave alkaline batteries longer but they don`t have the run time LiPo has with high outputs and with low outputs plus the efficiency of new dyes they are unbeatable. The only time I would say alkaline is better is if your a person who doesn`t want to think about it. I charge mine up every couple of months so I won`t have an issue, people who neglect the cells may run into an issue. Personally with Olight and thier protection systems, even neglectful people won`t have an issue 6 months to a year IMO and leaving. I have some lights that can run days on end without a charge putting out over 100+ lumens, that in itself is literally impossible to do with alkaline. Like I said all you need is a car or a simple amazon solar charger and your set for years.
If you ask me certain lights in general are not for emergencies but are for specialized purposes. Lights like the acebeam X80 (Which I want to use for corrections) or noctigon M43 for a crazy CRI/corrections/color matching. Small EDC lights like the R50 are literally unbeatable, power output, size and run time they cannot be matched.
The other thing is if your handy, in diar situations you can pull the cells and use them for a number of tasks from starting a fire to powering large scale machines due to thier insane amperage. No alkaline can discharge the amount of power an 26650 or even an 18650 can. I think about multiple tasks not just lighting when buying stuff like this. In emergencies, multiple uses are key, Sandy (No power for 3 weeks) definitely showed us that.
The one thing I will 100% agree on is scarcity, AA`s can be found anywhere but just like gas in bad situations they also go quick. To be honest, I also prefer 18650 Lipo`s in emegencies because most 99% of the population don`t realize they have them and won`t try and kill you over them. I can find excellent 18650`s in cheap garbage laptops, simple powerbanks and tons of other devices that no one would ever suspect, especially in an emergencency.
Fun fact: 90% of the old dell, HP an sony laptops which school districts throw out by the hundreds every year use TOP end Sony 18650`s which are slow drain and last days upon days. They can be found in landfills, dumpsters or even recycling centers. I know a gentleman that guts old laptops from school districts and sells the cells in 10 packs, they work amazing. Scarcity of lipo is more a myth then truth, people just don`t know enough about lipo or are scared of it.

The general public doesn`t really care to stock up on said power delivery systems...
They are prone to what they know and what is easy on deck.
$7 for a battery single what. I can buy 25-50 pack of AA at Staples, Costco, Home Depot....
For all we know Angus will buy a fancy pants EDC and then when the SHTF and he`s thinking he will just buy a couple of batteries to go with his fancy pants flashlight on the way home from work, only to find out none of the stores have them....and then when get goes to his nearest vape store and see the price of a battery, he says WTF, that much for one battery....
eh, different strokes for different folks, but for the majority, I would still err on the side of caution and recommend a AA/AAA lantern moreso just due to availability...
Sandy did teach us alot of things. I generally had 2 Jerry Cans of fuel I rotate out. After Sandy, I have 15 jerry cans. Still only keep 2 full at any given time, but I do have Jerry Cans for use when needed.

I definitely agree on that, Lipo is not cheap either. That said batteries are like car parts, you NEED to find the OEM suplier for batteries, same product just branding. Olight batteries are essentially panasonic`s (Not sure the exact model off the top of my head).
(Guys on here, if you buy your own parts, please don`t buy from the dealer. Your wasting good hard earned dollars.)
We learned from the brownout before sandy, what we saw during sandy was crazy, gasoline lines, mob mentality and blaintant disregard for others. We installed a natural gas generator, it has been incredible. I`m telling you it`s the best investment you can buy for a home, if you have natural gas lines though. The whole house is self sufficient.
Knowledge and preparation are the key to SHTF situations, don`t be another sheep to slaughter.
Oh and a remmington 870 is a must as well.

Hehe... You`re not far off! I looked into fancy pants Fenix PD35 while back and yeah you`re right the price of the batteries alone was a little toooo much for me. So for now, I`m rocking a small arsenal of charged and ready to go AAA and AA Eneloops w/ a few dozen alkaline AAA and AA`s as back-up`s. LED camping lanterns + various other simple LED fashlights work for me
