Howto SSR1

I'm about to use SSR1 for the first time and would like some pointers/advice.
It'll be on a less than one year old car that's been pretty well cared for so I don't expect much paint damage. Probably some light swirls. It's a silver grey metallic color. Mercury Marauder. I'm planning on using a white pad with the PC, probably at 3.5 to 4.5. Will this provide enough "polish" and enough shine to UPP afterwards? Or do I need to do something between SSR1 and UPP? Am I on the right track here?

I've got so many things to top UPP with, #16, Natty's, Butter Wax, P21S, Victoria Concours, and 476S. I'm leaning REAL hard towards 476S. I just really like the stuff.

Off the top of my head I think the polishing pad and the speeds you indicated are right. But wait for a Vet to post who's better on this than me...I haven't used the PC/SSR on my 5-month old Honda Civic yet.

Depends on the pad....my Orange SONUS cutting pad turned absolute black when I did mom's 10-year old black Camry....soak the pads in Dawn first, then a good microfiber restorer to clean the junk out. If you don't get 100% of the stuff out, then just mark that pad for SSR's in general or that SSR1 in particular.
 
I have gotten the best shine using SSR 1 on a polishing or finishing pad at max speed on the PC. It is incredible. A little goes a long way and buff it til it is pretty much gone.
It almost looks like a clear glaze ... and yes ... go right to UPP afterwards.

That is what worked best for me, using both Meguiar's Polish and Finish Pads and the Edge 2000 polishing pad. Max speed gave it that extra pop. It might be the same if you worked the product a lot longer on a lower speed. The reason I go straight from SSR 1 to UPP is that when I applied AIO over the SSR 1, it actually muted the look left from the SSR 1. I am about to try UPC so we will see how that affects the look.

Not really - it is the artificial color that does it to the pad - not paint. I have had my pads turn black from working on SS black paint or green for that matter. Afterwards you just wash it out and the pad is back to white. m2c

This is why I want to goto another "How-To" workshop that I've seen mentioned on this site before.
 
Anytime I'm polishing or buffing w/PC its always at 5 and if Its not working good enough I go to ludacris speed . You won't hurt anything at high speeds it just speeds up the process w/great results..

Exactly - just look at pictures of cars that were done with a rotary. Those cars always outshine the once with pc imho.
 
OK, the census of opinion seems to be high speed on the PC for polishing. When then, would you want to use the lower speeds?
 
Re: Howto SSR1 RESULTS!

Today I did the silver car with SSR1. I turned the PC up to 5-5.5 as suggested here. It vibrated significantly more at 6 so I backed it off just a bit. I started out spritzing the white Sonus pad with PB S&W. It started getting rather gummy and black. I took a nylon brush to it to clean off the gummy black stuff that was flipping off on the car. After awhile I switched to EO Wet, Wipe & Shine and the black gummy stuff slowly went away. I don't know what that was all about. Everything went fine. I buffed until it was mostly gone. Then wiped it off with a MF towel. It looked real good. There were some small scratches that I could see if I looked just right. I went over them again, but it didn't seem to make much difference. Maybe I'm just not spending enough time polishing. I'm moving back and forth fairly slowly overlapping 50% as I go. Other than the gummy substance I didn't have any caking of product. Then I put down the 4* UPP that I was lucky enough to get for the cost of shipping (Thanks Dwayne) with a blue MF foam applicator. I was very pleased with the results. I think it came out looking very wet and it was very slick. I let it sit for a long 15 minutes before wiping off with a MF towel. It came off VERY easy without dusting. I guess I got me another "keeper." I'm posting a couple of not very good pictures, but hoprfully it shows well enough for you to get the idea.

Now for that once white pad. I used 1-oz of Charlie's Soap APC in a gallon of warm water. I let it soak for 15-20 minutes and then lightly brushed it with a nylon bristle brush. It came clean, but remained stained pink. I rinsed it out and did the same thing again this time using 303 Aerospace Cleaner. Same thing. I don't think it was any less pink. So I went through the routine again, this time using Sonus Der Wunder Wasche. Still pink! :)

Steve: There's the true test of your new APC -- will it get the pink out? :dunno

I told you guys that the pink color will not come out. No big deal though.

Once I got used to speed 6 on the pc, I could not go back to 5 or less for polishing. Plus it IS much more effective at that speed. m2c

The car looks good. Any full car shots? As to problem with S&W, is I think the S&W was cleaning the surface. Did you clay or other polishing steps?

Sorry, I didn't get a full car shot. My son said he had clayed it about a month ago, but I insisted on claying the hood and trunk lid. Other than that, no. Just the SSR1 and white Sonus pad and S&W for spritzing. Would the S&W have taken more dirt off than the EO? Interesting idea for sure.

I would have to say yes, to S&W taken more dirt off. PB S&W has more cleaning ability than EOWS IMO, Steve would know best, maybe he will reply.

Where the surface you clayed dirty or in need of claying?

First it look s very clear and reflective:bigups

What you got off was old product, that was the gummy black stuff, since that finish is clearcoated it can not give you anything otherthan what is on it. What were you using on it previously? I also don't recommend spritzing pads with polish on them unless you want to make the SSR's more aggressive.
No the pink isn't coming out :lmfao
