How to identify clear coat?

How can you tell if the paint has clear coat? I'm new at this and couldn't tell if my car has clear coat or not. The car is 2001 Porsche Boxster S (seal gray color). Thanks in advance.

I didn't know that without clear coat, your color would come off if you polish them. Thanks for the tip.

I'd expect anything mid-80's on up to have clear. This isn't probably 100% accurate but for the most part. My friends 86 chevy pickup has clear.

Unless you get a cheap-o non-OEM paint job, then it may not have clear.

Clear started around the mid 70's and some cars had it earlier than that. Pretty much as said before if you polish or use a cleaner polish and the applicator turns the color of the car you do not have a clear coat.

When polishing you are removing micro layers of paint, thus you have the color of the car on the pad. When polishing a clear coated car the micro layers are clear and thus you do not see them on the pad.

If you ever wet sand clear that milky white looking liquid is the lube, normally water, and the little microscopic bits of clear you sanded off mixed with the lube.

very few cars these days don't have clear. Chances are almost certian that your car will always have clear coats. (there are exceptions but not many)

I know Toyota's white does not have clear coat.

As others have said, you will end up with the color of the car on your polishing media. Unless your car was repainted or some other funky thing went on, you have clear on that car.
